Shannon Sharpe, who faced rape, battery, and emotional distress charges in April 2025, reached a "mutually agreed" resolution with the accuser.

On Friday, July 18, the accuser's attorney, Tony Buzbee, announced on X that all matters related to the lawsuit had been addressed "satisfactorily," and the $50 million lawsuit was "dismissed with prejudice." He added that both sides acknowledged Sharpe and Jane Doe had a "long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship."

Reacting to the announcement on July 19, conservative commentator Candace Owens took to X to weigh in on the broader implications for men in today's society regarding marriage and relationships.

In her post, Owens cited the argument that men shouldn't get married because the courts are "unfavorable" to them in divorce cases, particularly due to financial repercussions. She referenced Shannon Sharpe's rape and sexual battery lawsuit, noting that Jane Doe, who "slept" with Sharpe, sought "$10 million," leading to a settlement.

The Candace host added that while the final settlement amount has not been revealed, the real question is how much men are paying in "shakedown" settlements to women they've had a "consensual" relationship with.

She further posed this question to her audience:

"So my question is, in today’s society which is perceived as a higher risk to men? Marriage (with the possibility of divorce) or no marriage (with the possibility of every woman you have relations with coming after you). Only interested in hearing male responses to this."

What were the allegations against Shannon Sharpe?

In April 2025, Jane Doe filed a $50 million civil lawsuit against Shannon Sharpe in Clark County, Nevada. According to CBS, they met at a gym in Los Angeles in 2023 when Jane Doe was 20 and Sharpe was 56.

The court documents stated that the two were in a "rocky consensual" relationship for nearly two years, during which Sharpe allegedly used his fame to "manipulate, control, subjugate and violate" her.

Jane Doe further alleged in the lawsuit that Sharpe recorded their sexual encounters and shared them with his "friends and associates" without her consent. She also claimed that the former American football player raped her twice, in October 2024 and January 2015.

"After many months of manipulating and controlling Plaintiff — a woman more than thirty years younger than he — and repeatedly threatening to brutally choke and violently slap her, Sharpe refused to accept the answer no and r*ped Plaintiff, despite her sobbing and repeated screams of 'no,'" the complaint alleged.

The lawsuit added that Sharpe flew into "fits of anger" whenever Jane Doe confronted him about cheating on her and that he even figured out a way to get into her apartment complex without her permission.

"A woman can say 'yes' to consensual s*xual relations with a man ninety-nine times, but when she says ‘no’ even once, that ‘no’ means no. Defendant Shannon Sharpe, a man who is accustomed to getting what he wants, completely fails to understand this basic concept," the lawsuit added.

In response, Shannon Sharpe posted a video on social media on April 22, calling the lawsuit a "shakedown" and claiming that Tony Buzbee "targets black people."

Subsequently, on April 24, the ESPN star revealed in a statement that he would temporarily step away from his ESPN duties until the NFL preseason.

It is worth noting that Tony Buzbee did not release any further details regarding the $50 million lawsuit settlement.
