The therapy session shows Pumpkin’s decision

During the counseling session, Pumpkin met with the therapist ahead of Josh’s arrival. She admitted feeling anxious about the conversation.

“I have to tell Josh that I do want to divorce, I am nervous. I’m scared to see how he’s going to react,” she said in her Mama June: Family Crisis confessional.

Despite her hesitation, she noted that the decision came from recognizing their incompatibility.

“We’re on two very different levels of what we want out of this relationship,” she highlighted.

When asked if Josh was aware of the meeting's purpose, Pumpkin explained that he wanted to fix things, but despite trying to make it work on "multiple" occasions, their efforts had not been successful. Once Josh entered the session, the therapist prompted Pumpkin to speak directly. She described how their communication had broken down:

“We’ve only been, like, passing each other at the house... doing what we need to do for the kids, but... we’re still not communicating...I think it would just be better if maybe, like, we just both... file for divorce.”

Following the session, Pumpkin visited her mother, June Shannon, and recounted what had taken place. She said that the therapy involved them sitting down with an expert and her "asking him for a divorce." When June asked:

“What? You decided to go through with it?” Pumpkin confirmed that she had.

Pumpkin also described Josh’s reaction to the news, saying he appeared sad but not surprised. She believed he was aware that the divorce was "coming." The Mama June: Family Crisis star further reiterated her decision, saying:

“I’m not gonna wait around forever for us to be able to communicate with each other, and put our kids through that.”

June replied, reminding her not to stay in the relationship for children, and Pumpkin concurred, stating she did not want to do that. Pumpkin also said she still wished to have a respectful co-parenting dynamic, adding that she wished to "be best friends" and be "cordial" for their kids' sake.

The on-screen announcement of divorce was concurrent with real-world events. As per filings initially reported by TMZ, Pumpkin filed for divorce in August 2024. She noted the couple had been in a “bona fide state of separation” since July 2024. The pair agreed to share joint legal and physical custody of their four children and waived the right to child support.

During a previous interview with TooFab, published on May 30, 2025, the Mama June: Family Crisis star reflected on their relationship. Pumpkin said:

“In our relationship, I done things that were obviously wrong... but he had a lot to answer for as well.”

She emphasized they tried various steps before separating, noting that they went through therapy and did not simply give up on a "10-year marriage."
