Ncuti Gatwa returned as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who season 15, which ran from December 25, 2024, to May 31, 2025. He goes on an intergalactic adventure to return his companion, Belinda Chandra, to Earth 2025. From Miami in 1952 to a quirky interstellar singing competition in the year 2925, the duo encounters strange events and villains, like Rani and the Omega from the Underverse.
Showrunner Russell T Davies reprises his role as head writer and producer, bringing eight episodes and a Christmas special and adding to the ever-expanding lore of the show. By the end, the Sixteenth Doctor is revealed, setting up for a brand new season. Ncuti Gatwa has exited after two seasons as the Doctor.
With plenty of loose ends and talking points, here are some unanswered questions from Doctor Who season 15 that need to be addressed in the newer iterations.

What's happening in the Doctor Who season 15 universe?
1) What happens to Susan?

The first companion and the Doctor's granddaughter, Susan (Carol Ann Ford), makes an exciting comeback in episode 6 of Doctor Who season 15. Right when Gutwa's Doctor is about to die from freezing after being pushed out into deep space, he has a psychic vision of Susan, who wakes and saves him.
After that, a video of her briefly appears on the Doctor's TV in the penultimate episode, but that's the extent of her role in the show. Fans wonder why such an important character who shaped the Doctor Who lore got less than a cameo role, without any effect on the overarching storyline. Will her cameo have a bigger payoff in season 16?
2) Is the Thirteenth Doctor's warning the next big story arc?

Jodie Whittaker's Doctor also makes a surprising cameo in Doctor Who season 15's finale, where she breaks out of her timeline to warn Gutwa's Doctor that his regeneration is a cause of concern and might result in a great big time schism. He does not pay heed to her warning, creating a reality where Poppy becomes Belinda's daughter after the chaos of the Rani and Omega is unleashed.
The Doctor's interference with regeneration and the time vortex might be setting up the next big story arc, and while Gutwa's Doctor won't be there to see it, the next Doctor has their work cut out for them. This is confirmed with the return of the Thirteenth Doctor.
3) How does Gutwa's Doctor become Rose Tyler?

For his final trick, the Doctor regenerates into a form resembling Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), a former companion who is hinted at being the newest lead on the show. Although Doctor Who season 16 is not yet confirmed, the regeneration has fans buzzing about the future of the show and what this would mean for the narrative.
This begs the question: why did the Doctor choose this form? Is it one of the many examples of Doctors going for a familiar face during regeneration? Fans must wait to see what a potential season 16 brings to the table.
4) Who is the "boss" that keeps getting mentioned?

In the finale of Doctor Who season 15, Anita Benn helps the Doctor restore UNIT's memories and save him from a sticky spot. She mentions the Boss in passing here, and Gatwa's Doctor seems to have no idea who that is. The Boss has been mentioned several times in the past, too.
The Meep tells David Tennant's Doctor that the Boss will hear about his two-heart situation in The Star Beast (60th anniversary special episode). Rogue also hints at a new Boss in season 14. The most recent reminder about the mysterious entity must mean that the hints might finally come to fruition and introduce the character. Would they be good or evil?
5) Will Rogue come back?

Rogue, the mysterious bounty hunter with a romantic connection to the Doctor, previously appeared in season 14, episode 6 titled Rogue. The trap they built together to capture the Chuldur and send them to an alternate dimension backfires when Ruby gets caught in it, and Rogue saves her by taking her place.
In season 15, episode 7 titled Wish World, Rogue appears to deliver an important message to the Doctor about being caught in a Hell Dimension. This alerts the Doctor to anomalies in reality and the sinister extent of the Rani's plan, but Rogue's future seems unclear. Will he escape the dimension? He says that he might not survive, which makes Jonathan Groff's return uncertain.
6) What happens to the surviving Time Lords and their ability to have kids?

In the Doctor Who season 15 finale, the Rani reveals that all surviving Time Lords are sterile and that Omega, the Mad God of the Time Lords, is the only hope to "re-birth" the race. While this ultimately leads to chaos before Mrs Flood sends him back to the Underverse, the question still stands: In what reality does the Doctor have kids?
Fans already know that Susan is the Doctor's granddaughter, which means that season 16 must tackle the sterility narrative and explain how the Doctor had a child and then a grandchild. While there have been no other hints of a child, and Fifteen has denied having them, the storyline might be taking shape soon.
7) Is this the end of the road for Belinda?

Belinda's story arc comes full circle this season. She wishes to return home and does in the Doctor Who season 15 finale titled The Reality War. While she does not have motherhood on the cards, Gutwa's Doctor altering reality means that Poppy becomes her daughter. With that, her story comes to a close.
Does this mean Belinda won't be returning for season 16? Fans will have to wait and see, especially after their final conversation, where they wonder if they'll ever see each other again.
