If the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese has brought viewership to the WNBA, it has also divided fans. Reese has been receiving a lot of flak lately, in light of her recent struggles on the court.
ESPN analyst Monica McNutt spoke out against unnecessary hate toward the Chicago Sky star from Clark's big fan base during her appearance on "The Collision Where Sports and Politics Collide." McNutt had a message for Clark fans.
"Caitlin Clark fans: You can love your favorite player and say nothing about Angel Reese," she said. "Like our parents used to say, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
WNBA fans slammed Monica McNutt in May for her interpretation of Caitlin Clark's flagrant foul on Angel Reese. During a discussion on ESPN's "Get Up," she said the conversation would have been different if the flagrant foul was committed "the other way around."
Angel Reese vs. Caitlin Clark: Looking at the talent gap between WNBA stars
The Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese debate is still creating traffic in the WNBA news. Since the time they went against each other for the first time, the competition has been fierce, at least in the minds of the fans on both sides.
It is only right to see and analyze how both stars have performed in their careers so far. In her rookie year, Angel Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game, compared to Clark's 19.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 8.4 apg and 1.3 spg.
However, this year, the difference between the two has widened. While Caitlin Clark is averaging 19.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 9.3 apg, 1.3 spg and 1.0 bpg, Reese has recorded 9.1 ppg, 12.3 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.6 spg and 0.3 bpg.
Their sophomore season has seen a stark difference in the impact of both players on their respective teams. In 2024, the Indiana Fever phenom had a -2.7 in +/- when she was on the court, on a total of 100 possessions. However, this season it has undergone drastic changes. Her team is now +10.7 when she is on the court.
This has been reversed in Angel Reese's case. In 2024, her team was 0.0 with her on the court in as many possessions. However, it has been a sharp decline for the Sky star. Chicago is -19.9 in 100 possessions when Reese is on the court.
Both players had similar offensive and defensive ratings in 100 possessions. Caitlin Clark had an ORtg of 103 and a DRtg of 109, compared to Angel Reese's 101 and 102. However, this season, the gap has widened between the two. In her sophomore year, Clark's ORtg is 100 and DRtg is 95, compared to Reese's 84 and 108.
