Sometimes, WCW could seem woefully out of touch with their audience, often pandering to very young children rather than the 16-32 year old men who made up a majority of the viewers. Hence, the debut of Fred Ottman as the Shockmaster.

Ottman had recently left WWE, where he portrayed, among others, the Typhoon character. He and partner John Tenta/Earthquake reigned as the tag team champions for three months, defeating Money Inc for the belts. He was meant to be an intimidating, powerful force, and instead became one of the funniest moments in wrestling history.
