The SummerSlam weekend has begun as NXT Takeover delivered an action-packed show. NXT Takeover: Toronto certainly put on one great show, but it was not among the greatest Takeover shows. The show had some good matches and the main event stole the show.
The most coveted prize of the developmental brand was on the line when Adam Cole faced Johnny Gargano. The two men locked horns in a 2 out-of 3 Falls Match and they certainly produced one of the best matches of the year, if not the best.
Since they already faced each other twice in the past, it was their third match. While Cole retained the belt after a hard-fought battle, Gargano bid farewell to the NXT Universe, which could suggest his departure from the developmental brand.
Although Gargano made his main roster debut earlier this year, he didn't stay long as the former NXT Champion went back to the black & yellow brand. Following the NXT Takeover in Toronto, it could be his final exit from NXT. Let's discuss three possible opponents for Johnny Gargano if he returns to the main roster.
#3 Rey Mysterio
Rey Mysterio could a suitable opponent as he could put over a new talent like Johnny Gargano. The former WWE Champion doesn't have a match at the Biggest Party of the Summer. Last week, Mysterio fought Andrade, and the latter pinned the former. Despite having a rivalry with Andrade, the feud doesn't have a proper direction.
Since returning to Vince McMahon's company last year, Rey Mysterio is having an ordinary run. Although Mysterio grabbed the US Championship, an injury forced him to relinquish the belt.
Rey Mysterio, who is certainly a titanic name of the company, could be a great challenge for Gargano if the latter wants to make a good first impression. Both Mysterio and Gargano are high-flyers and their matches should be exciting for the fans.
#2 Ricochet
Ricochet is scheduled to have a match at SummerSlam where he will take on AJ Styles. Similar to Gargano, Ricochet also made his main roster debut earlier this year. It has been an extraordinary run for the former NXT North American Champion and he has established himself as a significant name on RAW. Ricochet has been on the main roster for just six months, but he has already won his first main roster title.
Ricochet grabbed the United States Championship at Stomping Grounds, where he beat Samoa Joe. However, the title reign didn't last long as he dropped the belt to Styles at Extreme Rules. It will be interesting to see if Ricochet becomes a two-time US Champion at SummerSlam.
Considering Ricochet has been feuding with Styles for a long time, he is not likely to renew the rivalry after SummerSlam. If Gargano makes his main roster return, Ricochet could be a great choice for him. Earlier this year in January, Gargano defeated Ricochet to become the NXT North American Champion. The two men are extremely dexterous in the ring and they could deliver some awesome matches.
#1 Andrade
Andrade is not a surprising entrant here, and he had a spectacular rivalry with Johnny Gargano in NXT. Though Andrade doesn't have an opponent at SummerSlam, he could begin a new rivalry after the show in Toronto. Earlier, Andrade competed in a Gauntlet Match to become the number one contender for AJ Styles, but the match was won by Ricochet.
Similar to Johnny Gargano, Andrade was a big name in NXT. However, he couldn't replicate the same success on the main roster. The former NXT Champion made his main roster debut last year but he has failed to reach the top of the ladder.
Despite his substandard booking, Andrade has delivered some remarkable matches on the main roster. When Andrade was the NXT Champion last year, he fought Gargano at NXT Takeover: Philadelphia. It was one of the greatest matches in the history of the developmental brand and the match won NXT Match of the Year Award in 2018.
Considering the track record of the two men, we could see more classic matches on the main roster if Andrade starts a new feud with Gargano.
