Once again, we'll need to rewind all the way back to 1993, when Bret Hart won the King of the Ring tournament. What made this year special is the fact that this was the first time that the King of the Ring tournament was produced as a pay-per-view event.
If rumors are to be believed, Vince McMahon recognized the fact that Bret Hart was his big breakthrough star, but with Hulk Hogan and Yokozuna in the title picture, he also needed to keep Hart happy and looking strong. This is precisely the same issue that also exists in today's SmackDown Live, with Kofi Kingston and Kevin Owens being over with fans.

Now, Kingston already has the WWE Championship. One assumes that Owens vs. Kingston is not the way to go, because both men are super over with fans and you wouldn't want to turn either of them heel based on the kind of momentum that the two men have at the moment.
And this is precisely why I believe that Kevin Owens will become the King of the Ring.
