Professional wrestlers have been making the crossover from wrestling to Hollywood films for decades. They usually have their best results when actually in a wrestling ring, but when they venture off to other projects, it is usually a hit or miss.
Wrestling has been the center of some great movies. This includes the Oscar-winning "The Wrestler" and Beyond The Mat. However, not every wrestling film can be as critically acclaimed
Many wrestlers opt to make movies, and here is a look at some of the best and worst movies starring pro wrestlers.
#3 Great: Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Condemned
Out of all the WWE Films that were released, the Condemned features one of the best superstars from the WWE and an excellent plot.
Ten people on death row are sent to an island for a reality show where they all must kill each other until one remains to stand and break free from his or her sentence.
You know that Stone Cold Steve Austin is obviously going to survive, but it is still very enjoyable watching the different unique deaths that go on throughout the film.
As the Marine, there are plenty of laughs too, and the premise is great.
Terrible: Hulk Hogan, No Holds Barred
The sacred cow of bad wrestling movies.
When you think of a bad wrestling movie, you immediately think of "No Holds Barred". Of course, this isn't the worst wrestling movie, but its pretty damn bad.
Starring the massively popular Hulk Hogan and Tiny "Zeus" Lister, the movie is a full-blown 80s cheese machine.
Vince McMahon even parlayed the movie into a wrestling feud, which translated into millions and millions of dollars. Okay, no it didn't. The feud did just as well as the movie.
#2 Great: Andre The Giant, The Princess Bride
In addition to being a major wrestling attraction, Andre the Giant proved he could actually act too.
Who could ever forget the lovable giant from the Princess Bride? The Princess Bride was a great and imaginative adventure. It had pirates, giants, duels, poison, and it even had Kevin from the Wonder Years and Colombo!
Andre the Giant himself was one of the most likable characters in the movie. He wasn't a great actor, but that actually made him funnier.
Even though he didn't get top billing in this film, he was the most memorable character in it and proved wrestlers could be successful in films without having to show off their wrestling moves every few minutes.
Terrible: Body Slam
The leading actor in this film also played the popular character known as "Face" on the 80s hit TV show, The A-Team. Well, the actor who played Face, Dirk Benedict, hopes you remember him from The A-Team and not from this awful 1980s wrestling film, Body Slam.
Also starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and The Tonga Kid, the movie is about a down and out music manager who starts taking on pro wrestlers as clients.
It's a true 80s B movie, complete with unfinished dialogue and over the top facial expressions.
#1 Great: They Live
Of all the popular wrestlers who tried their hands at acting in the 80s, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper takes the top spot.
Piper was one of the main headliners in the WWE even though he never won the world title, but he made his presence felt, and had many classic moments in the horror film, They Live.
Aliens have invaded planet earth, but they are in the form of humans, and only Piper can see them by wearing his special sunglasses. He has a memorable street fight and classic lines like,
"I came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass....and I'm all out of bubblegum".
Sure, the dialogues in this film weren't the greatest, and they relied heavily on random violence, but Piper really knocked it out of the park.
Terrible: Mr. Nanny
Hulk Hogan in a ballerina dress. What could be so bad about that?
In 1993, Hulk Hogan teamed up with George Jefferson to create one of the worst wrestling movies of all time. Though Mr. Nanny did not focus entirely on wrestling, the once mighty Hulkster did play a retired wrestler, whose arch nemesis is his former ring manager.
The movie is a rip off of the Home Alone franchise, in which children play insane practical tricks on blundering adults. After the movie bombed, Hogan washed back onto the shore of Connecticut and into Vince McMahon's awaiting playland.
