The story goes back to 2012 when Paul Heyman returned to the WWE after being away from the company for six years. At that time he appeared just once on Chris Jericho's podcast alongside Edge.
He said that he wasn't sure if Vince McMahon would like him upon his return after their relationship ended on bad terms back in 2006.
