3 WrestleMania Opponents for Universal Champion Finn Balor

The NEW WWE Universal Champion
The NEW WWE Universal Champion

Finn Balor is set to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship at the 2019 Royal Rumble.

We have made the case for why he could win this match.

We have made the case for how he could win this match.

Let us assume that Finn Balor has defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship, and is now a two-time WWE Universal Champion.

Let us assume that he holds the championship for more than a day this time.

Let us assume that he successfully holds the championship until WrestleMania 35.

Who will he face?

Walking into WrestleMania 35 holding the top championship on Monday Night RAW is as good as it gets. It is a marquee spot on the most important card of the year. The challenger is every bit as important as the champion; it takes two to tango.

If Finn Balor really does walk into WrestleMania 35 as the Universal Champion, it is proof that the WWE trusts him to be a main-event player. As such, he will be paired with another main-event player. This opponent is likely to be a heel; that rules out the likes of AJ Styles and Seth Rollins. It should also be a relatively fresh match-up, ruling out the likes of Drew McIntyre and Baron Corbin.

Who could this challenger be?

Let's find out.

#1 Brock Lesnar

Balor. Lesnar. One more time.
Balor. Lesnar. One more time.

Brock Lesnar is owed an automatic rematch if he loses the WWE Universal Championship. The WWE can say that automatic rematches are a thing of the past till they are blue in the face; this is Brock Lesnar. Rules don't apply to 'The Beast Incarnate'. The rule that a champion must defend every 30 days or be stripped of the championship does not apply to him either. If Brock Lesnar says he wants a rematch, he will get a rematch.

Brock Lesnar does not wrestle at 'B' pay-per-views regularly. He is Brock Lesnar. This rematch will take place at WrestleMania 35.

Of all the choices on the list, this is the least interesting. But it is also the most likely.

#2 Randy Orton

The 13 time World Champion
The 13 time World Champion

What if Randy Orton won the 2019 Royal Rumble match and challenged Finn Balor for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 35?

This match is appealing for a number of reasons. Randy Orton is a WWE mega-star. He has main-evented two WrestleManias and been in world championship matches at 5 WrestleManias. He has also faced The Undertaker at WrestleMania, an honour that some believe is equal to fighting for the world championship. He is a 13-time world champion. In contrast, Finn Balor has only ever competed at WrestleMania once; an Intercontinental Championship Triple Threat Match that he lost. Randy Orton's presence in this match will help Finn Balor become a bigger star.

Randy Orton is also an excellent wrestler. This will ensure that the match quality is worthy of a world championship match at WrestleMania.

Randy Orton is a vicious, sadistic, deranged heel. Finn Balor will have to tap into his darker side to beat him. Finn Balor will have to summon 'The Demon'.

The Demon versus The Viper at WrestleMania? Yes, please.

#3 Triple H

Is Finn Balor another 'B plus' player
Is Finn Balor another 'B plus' player

Remember what Vince McMahon said to Finn Balor when he asked to be considered for the opportunity to face Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble? Vince McMahon said that Finn Balor was a fine competitor, but too small to hang with Brock Lesnar, or the other heavyweights in the ring; Drew McIntyre, John Cena, and Baron Corbin.

What if the WWE continued this story? As COO, and a part of the McMahon family, what if Triple H shared these doubts? What if he thought that Finn Balor was too small to be champion, and that was not what was best for business?

The last time the WWE ran a storyline like this with Triple H, it was wildly successful. I speak of course of the 'Yes Movement' at WrestleMania 30.

It is certainly worth trying again.
