Jinder Mahal received a push following WrestleMania 33, culminating in a win over Randy Orton at Backlash in May 2017 for the WWE Championship, becoming the 50th WWE Champion, and the first wrestler of Indian descent to win the title.

His title reign was probably the worst period for SmackDown Live, with Jinder being the face of the brand. He had forgettable feuds with Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura over the course of his championship reign.

Everyone took a sigh of relief when AJ Styles defeated Mahal weeks before Survivor Series, because finally Vince decided to move away from Jinder, and for once gave fans what they wanted.

There is no doubt that he lowered the prestige of the WWE Championship belt. His matches were really bad, and him being dependent on The Singh Brothers for the win did not help either.

The kind of coward heel he was playing at the time made it even worse, as no one likes that kind of champion. Lets just hope that WWE does not give him such a prestigious belt ever again.
