WWE has made Carmella the dark horse in her own title match.

Carmella's Smackdown Live Women's Title reign has been labelled by the WWE Universe as one of the worst Women's Title reigns of the women's revolution era. As her subpar performances in title matches, her predictable booking as an annoying heel that cant do nothing without her sidekick and her limited capabilities as an entertainer has all been criticized by the WWE Universe.

But the truth is Carmella is better than most give her credit, as it is WWE's booking that is to blame for her position as a weak champion on Smackdown Live.

And sure it is only a matter of time before WWE cuts her title reign short in favour of a new champion to run the division, but at Summerslam, it feels as if that won't be the case, as many reasons could indicate Carmella is going to retain her title and that to clean.

Over two weeks ago on Smackdown Live, Becky Lynch and Carmella gave promos talking about what their match at Summerslam meant each one of them, and while Lynch's promo was what you would expect, Carmella produced the best promo of her entire WWE career.

As she touched on people telling her she would never be more than a manager on NXT, her jealousy of seeing the four horsewomen of NXT always being one step ahead of her all the time and the fact that she has to deal with people telling her she is never good enough to be champion every single day.

And while it was revealed as a set up to assault Lynch, it did feel sincere, and it felt like the first sign of character depth WWE was adding to her persona, as the reason for her being a cocky, annoying heel was given an origin story.

Also, with Charlotte returning the same night and defeating Carmella which allowed her to be added to the Smackdown Live Women's Title match at Summerslam, it already sowed seeds of doubt in her friendship with Becky Lynch, as Lynch is tired of Charlotte stealing her thunder. And this week on Smackdown Live, the fans saw Lynch once again cast in the shadow of Charlotte, and this time Becky was visibly frustrated.

So fans would be thinking the set up is easy for Carmella to retain her title, Charlotte and Becky take each other out which allows Carmella to swoop in and take advantage, and yeah that could happen. But what if WWE wants to keep the title on Carmella and wants a strong champion heading into the first WWE women's pay-per-view? Well, the answer is simple, make Camella go over strong at Summerslam, as the reasoning for her shifting her character from snarky heel to defending champion is embedded in her promo, she is tired of being underrated and overlooked.

Moreover, if WWE wants to crown a new WWE Women's Champion at the historic women's pay-per-view, it would be safe to say they would want the women's champion to be in some shape or form have some credibility to give to that superstar. So Camella beating Lynch and Charlotte clean to bring her narrative full circle and going on to lose her title to an upcoming star at WWE Evolution is pausable, to say the least.
