The main-event of King of the Ring 1999 saw 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin face Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon in a handicap match for control of WWE. The contract was in a briefcase hanging above the ring.

The previous month had seen Vince's wife Linda McMahon return and show concern in the direction that the WWE was going. Linda then decided to name Stone Cold as the CEO of the WWE. Austin made life hell for Vince McMahon at WWE HQ and it lead to Vince booking the match at King of the Ring.

Austin dominated the match and destroyed the McMahons. As he went to retrieve the briefcase, it was raised, and then raised again out of Austin's reached. This cost Austin the match but we never found out who actually raised the briefcase.
