Shane and Kane had battled in WWE before this encounter, and they had produced decent, if not excellent, matches earlier. Kane was forced to unmask after losing against Triple H and was settling into his new look and persona.
Kane had become unstable during this period, was attacking people, and Linda McMahon became a victim of his rage.
Shane McMahon had to return to his mother's rescue, which led to a match between "The Big Red Machine" and McMahon at Unforgiven. Shane's over the top antics had become a part of his character now and thus the stipulation of this match, a Last Man Standing Match, was hardly surprising.
The two superstars produced a quality match from start to finish, with Shane taking an insane bump onto the announce table, resulting in Kane picking up the win.
