5 directions for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34

The Universal Championship is turning into WWE's biggest title
The Universal Championship is turning into WWE's biggest title

While it’s entirely possible that some may have more of an investment in the other matches set to take place in New Orleans, nobody can deny the fascination surrounding Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns. It may not be the public’s choice, and it may end up being a disaster, but it’s certainly going to be entertaining.

The first instalment alone was enough to draw us in, with their legendary match at WrestleMania 31 being the major highlight of the Santa Clara show. Of course, some will argue that was because of Seth Rollins cashing in his Money in the Bank contract, but the lead-up to that moment was just as extraordinary.

No matter what happens at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in one month, we’re fairly confident that people are going to be talking about it for years to come.

With that being said, here are five directions for the Universal Title at WrestleMania 34.

#5 No main event

Should Styles vs Nakamura headline the show?
The dream match

This one is going to sound utterly ridiculous on the face of it, so bear with us. While it has been advertised around the world that Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns will face off against one another in the main event of WrestleMania 34, what if they pulled an audible and changed it at the last minute? After all, nobody really knew what the main event of last year’s Mania was going to be until the show actually started.

You could have AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura close the night instead, and while that may not necessarily be a universally popular opinion (pun not intended) it could work out for the best. That way, no matter what happens in the finish of the Reigns vs Lesnar match, it won’t matter quite as much because the true main event will be what the majority of people want to see.

#4 Reigns overcomes the odds

We've seen it before
We've seen it before

This is probably the most likely option of them all, and unfortunately, it’s the one we all need to start preparing ourselves for. There’s no doubt in our mind that Reigns was initially supposed to capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Brock back at WrestleMania 31, and this time, you just know that Vince isn’t going to let the fans get in the way of what he wants to see.

The funny part about this is that the match itself will probably be great, but the elephant in the room will always be that people aren’t going to accept the idea of Roman pulling it off. It’d be great to live in a world where Reigns is accepted as the face of the company, but if they go down this route, WrestleMania 34 may well be considered a failure.

#3 A shock Lesnar win

Lesnar rarely loses
Lesnar rarely loses

Brock Lesnar probably isn’t going to escape WrestleMania 34 with his Universal Championship, first and foremost because it’s rumoured that he’s heading to the Ultimate Fighting Championship for another run as an MMA fighter. While that’s all well and good, it’d be fascinating to see what would happen if Brock actually did defeat Roman Reigns.

It may not be quite as shocking as the streak being broken, but it’d be pretty close. Lesnar could go on to drop it at the next pay-per-view or may even hold on to the title till WrestleMania 35, depending on whether or not WWE can sign him to another deal. Don’t get your hopes up for this one, but just keep it in the back of your head as a slim possibility.

#2 The Strowman effect

He's not finished with them
He's not finished with them

As of this moment, Braun Strowman is not booked to have a match at WrestleMania 34, and that is a crime in itself. The Monster Among Men has been by far the most captivating member of the WWE roster this year, with his character only being matched in quality by his performances in the ring.

A guy of his stature should not be able to do some of the things Strowman is capable of, and yet, he continues to make it look easy. In terms of Mania, there are rumours flying around that they’re keeping Strowman on standby as a potential replacement for Reigns – but why not just insert him into the match beforehand and make it a triple threat?

The fans will be way more into it if Braun Strowman is involved, and he’s had storied rivalries with both of these guys.

#1 The Big Dog turns heel

Could it happen?
Could it happen?

Do we legitimately think the WWE are going to pull the trigger on this? No. Are we going to stop talking about it because of that? Absolutely not. Look, some of us like to believe that miracles can happen, and as a result, this line of thinking is perfectly acceptable – especially when you’re a fan of something as outlandish as professional wrestling.

Roman Reigns turning heel is something that should’ve happened at WrestleMania 33, WrestleMania 32, and to an extent, they could’ve pulled it off at WrestleMania 31. Alas, they didn’t, but now would be the time for us to dive headfirst into a Roman Reigns run as the top heel in the company.

Think about this as a justified Mania ending: the underappreciated Reigns wins the Universal Title courtesy of help from The Bloodline Jimmy & Jey Uso.
