5 dream matches wrestling fans want to see

Omega and Styles were once allies, but many fans want to see them lock up in the ring

You'd think with the deep, diverse rosters of New Japan, ROH, and WWE, fans would be satisfied. But no! They always want more. After all, if Wrestler A has faced or beaten everyone in his promotion, why not take on someone new?

You'll find this attitude even with long-term wrestling fans, or diehards dedicated to one brand. There's always a tweet, a post, or an article about why this or that wrestler would make for great opponents, and that's natural. Just like when people speculate over whether the 1977 Raiders could defeat the 2002 Patriots, fans like to wonder what would happen if the dream came true.

Here are ten dream matchups that fans are just dying to see:

1. Punishment Martinez (ROH) vs. Undertaker (WWE Legend)

Many compare Punishment Martinez to the Undertaker.

The Undertaker can still put on a stellar performance even decades into his career.
The Undertaker can still put on a stellar performance even decades into his career.

ROH unabashedly promotes Punishment Martinez as the heir to the Undertaker's throne, and why shouldn't they? The comparisons are numerous and profound. Both men are towering titans with the ability to fly through the air like a cruiserweight. Both men have a definite theatrical presence that wins fans to their side without uttering a word, and both enjoy a creepy charisma that is equal parts unsettling and evocative.

Why fans want this dream match: The athleticism of both men is unparalleled in their weight class. Fans love to see matches between big men who can really move, and this match satisfies that need. And let's not discount the fact that Martinez clearly grew up watching and idolizing the Undertaker. All the ingredients are there for a fantastic match of the past vs. the future.

Chances of the match happening: Not so good at the moment. ROH is poised to stage a show at Madison Square Garden and is putting all its energy behind growing its fan base. They aren't likely to let Martinez go easily, and there's little chance Undertaker would ever work for ROH simply because of his lucrative legends contract with the WWE. But, things can change in a split second, and it could still happen.

2. Ricochet (NXT) vs. Jushin Thunder Liger (New Japan)

Ricochet is one of the best high flyers in the world right now.

Jushin Thunder Liger paved the way for smaller wrestlers to take center stage.
Jushin Thunder Liger paved the way for smaller wrestlers to take center stage.

In another matchup featuring youth vs. experience, we see the legendary Liger battling a much younger, faster, but less disciplined and worldly Ricochet. Recent WWE acquisition Ricochet--who wrestled as Prince Puma in Lucha Underground--is one of the most dynamic and exciting athletes in pro wrestling today. Liger pioneered high flying action and breathtaking spots, and is still one of the most amazing wrestlers working today at over fifty years of age.

Why fans want to see this dream match: Ricochet is absolutely on fire right now, and Liger has enjoyed a career renaissance in recent years. Liger could be seen as 'passing the torch' to the new generation while giving a shout out to the past.

Chances of this match happening: Poor to fair. WWE has courted Liger in recent years, mostly as a special attraction for their NXT brand--the brand Ricochet currently wrestles on, but he hasn't shown much interest in working for them. However, Liger prefers working with younger talent, and we can't imagine Ricochet saying no to a match with a legend like JTL, so never say never.

3. SoCal Uncensored (ROH and indies) vs. The New Day (WWE)

SoCal Uncensored features two wily veterans and a young lion.

The New Day wasn't expected to last, but they keep going strong and are social media darlings.
The New Day wasn't expected to last, but they keep going strong and are social media darlings.

SoCal Uncensored is the recent teaming of Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, and Scorpio Sky. The three friends and teammates came together out of mutual respect and a desire to dominate the six-man tag divisions of various federations. The New Day was initially criticized as being just another ethnic stable but have emerged as something much more than that, a triumvirate that wins the hearts and smiles of fans the world over.

Why fans want to see this dream match: Between Kofi Kingston, Daniels, and Kazarian, you have three of the best aerial artists the sport has ever seen. Adding in the power of Big E and the human dynamo that is Scorpio Sky just makes it that much better.

Chances of this match happening: Slim to none. Daniels and Kazarian are on the waning years of their careers, and aren't likely to be signed by the WWE, and the New Day sell enough merchandise that the WWE isn't likely to let them go easily.

4. Dalton Castle (ROH) vs. Golddust (WWE)

Dalton Castle is like Gorgeous George mixed with Dean Malenko.

Golddust once made shocking behavior an art form, but now is much more tame.
Golddust once made shocking behavior an art form, but now is much tamer.

Dalton Castle is the 'just add water' instant sensation of ROH. His flamboyant outfits and outrageous, progressive-minded entrance are works of art in and of themselves, and he's a fantastic wrestler to boot. Golddust has escaped his famous father Dusty Rhodes's shadow by playing one of the most controversial and compelling characters of all time.

Why fans want to see this dream match: They are two sides of the same coin, portraying openly gay wrestlers. Dalton presents a much better image for the modern wrestling fan, while Golddust's character tapped into homophobia for heel heat. Seeing Dalton Castle vanquish Golddust would be like seeing old social mores eradicated in effigy.

Chances of this match happening: Fair. Dalton is definitely on the WWE's radar, as they have a habit of hiring former ROH champs (Samoa Joe, Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, and AJ Styles have all held gold in ROH.) However, Golddust has to be getting close to a formal retirement given his age and the wear and tear on his body. It could happen, but don't hold your breath.

5. AJ Styles (WWE) vs. Kenny Omega (New Japan)

Many fans and critics believe AJ Styles is the best wrestler in the world today.

However, many also say the same about Kenny Omega. Who really is the best? Fans would love to find out.

The two men were allies in Bullet Club back in AJ's New Japan days, but didn't get a chance for a big match against each other. Omega is the belle of the wrestling ball after his magnificent performance against Rainmaker Okada, while AJ Styles is unquestionably the best wrestler on WWE's roster at the current moment.

Why fans want to see this match: Both men are high flyers with plenty of technical acumen. A match between them would be dynamic, deeply layered, and have fantastic psychology.

Chances of this match happening: Not so good. Omega feels WWE would not be a fertile ground for him to grow in, and AJ Styles is probably wrapping up his career and making his fortune working for WWE. There's a better chance of Omega joining WWE than Styles going back to New Japan, but it's a slim chance at the moment.

There you have it: Five dream matches fans would love to see. What other dream matches do you think should or could happen? Please comment and let us know.
