Kairi Sane won the inaugural Mae Young Classic

A pioneer for Women's wrestling, and a sports entertainer that could rival the big box office money earners of the current era; Mae Young had a sparkle that has not been replicated since. Mae's in-ring technique, desire to perform, and willingness to entertain in whatever way the WWE storytellers saw fit, showed the amazing raw talent that Mae was blessed with.

Now that WWE is in a new era; revered with amazing new talent, and the women's revolution that has spawned what many believe to be the best Woman's roster of all time, it seems only fitting for WWE to continue with that momentum.

After the commencement of the 32-competitor Mae-Young classic, there seems to have been an atomic rise in the popularity for the division. Here we will look at the five Mae Young competitors who would make Mae proud, and supplement the main WWE roster as the ideal in-ring performer alongside the current division's talented roster.

1: Kairi Sane

After winning the Mae Young classic, Kairi is easily the first on the list. With her pirate gimmick and the most amazing diving elbow drop in the industry, there is little Kairi cannot accomplish within WWE. With the success of her compatriots; such as Nakamura and Asuka, it seems the WWE would be wise to cash in on the style and quality of the Japanese talent.

Expect to see Sane tearing it up at the top of NXT very soon. Then the main roster not much further away.

2: Abbey Laith

En
The closest you'll get to Mae Young of old.

Laith oozes talent with a swathe of experience through various wrestling promotions, from Shine and Shimmer, to Chikara. Now signed with NXT from January, it is obvious that WWE see massive potential. An interesting narrative throughout the tournament, was a symbolic handing of the torch from Mae Young to Laith. With both at the same age, they show a similar look and physique, and the use of the 'Alligator Clutch' is certainly a hats off to the late great aforementioned.

If Laith builds on her current momentum, she could find herself in the NXT title picture before the end of this year. Don't be fooled by her ballerina background, she can certainly punch her way to the top.

3:Toni Storm

The <p>
The 21 year old Aussie certainly made herself known

With an electric attitude and a rock star's personality, there is no question that Toni won over the fans from the get go. Being only 21, you would think she was in over her head against more experienced opponents, however the reality is she has been training since she was 13. It was no surprise based on her talent and her eccentric charisma, that she made it to the semi-finals, only to fall short against Kairi Sane.

Although it appears that Storm is not currently signed with the WWE, she will obviously be watched over, until the talent scouts deem her ready to move into the limelight. A period in the independent circuit can only improve her ability, and allow her the creativity to find her own character further. After that, she may have a legacy that may see her walk straight into one of the main house shows.

4: Piper Niven

Niven proves that size doesn't matter

The Scottish pro turned heads and changed opinions on the culture and look of woman's wrestling. Showing that appearances don't matter; Piper displayed performances that made her stand out as one of the most agile wrestlers in the competition. Whether Niven's unique look swayed the crowd into supporting a new face, it is clear that she has talent that could easily take her to the top of the WWE. With a pronounced use of the turnbuckle, and work from the top rope, and a mean Michinoku Driver, its obvious she's not another one-move giant of the ring.

Piper is another competitor not currently signed with the WWE. However she is clearly quite sought after, and will be on the radar of the WWE's upper hierarchy after making such an impact. Another competitor with her own unique character, and perspiring in-ring aura. I only see one way for this Lass.

5: Dakota Kai

Kai
Kai is one of the surprise performers of the tournament

The Kiwi ass-kicker certainly raised eyebrows, not to mention the ones she grazed off of her opponents with her running turnbuckle big boot. Don't be in question about her fun and kind nature as she makes her entrance to the ring. As soon as that bell rings, Kai knows how to take down her opponents, including those much bigger than her. She has a similarity in gimmick to Bailey, but one that would not be a miss in the main roster, perhaps an interesting woman's tag team?

Dakota has been signed with the WWE since December last year. It seems that WWE are putting feelers out to the public for potential gimmicks trialed by many competitors signed with the wrestling company. Abbey Laith is another good example. But as it is for Abbey, it is the same for Kai, a great gimmick and personality that suits their out of ring nature. Apart from Kairi Sane, I see Dakota Kai as one of the next Mae Young classic competitors, to set foot in the "big league".
