5 Most extreme WWE matches of 2018

2018 was a pretty good year for WWE fans despite the occasional RAW's that left us wanting more. In spite of the state of RAW, 2018 gave us some great matches and some incredible individual performances from WWE Superstars.

With 2018 now coming to an end, in this article, we take a look at some of the most extreme matches that we saw in WWE this year.

Out of the five matches on this list, four are from NXT. The only main roster match that made the cut was the TLC match between Becky Lynch, Asuka and Charlotte Flair at WWE TLC earlier this month,

#5 Becky Lynch vs Charlotte Flair vs Asuka (TLC match at WWE TLC)

All three women unleashed hell on each other as they hit each other with chairs, kendo sticks and anything else found around the ring

WWE TLC gave us one of the most extreme matches on the main roster that we've seen this year. The main-event saw Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Asuka duke it out for the SmackDown Women's Championship in the first-ever women's TLC match in WWE history.

All three women unleashed hell on each other as they hit each other with chairs, kendo sticks and anything else found around the ring. When the smoke cleared, it was Asuka who won the match to win the SmackDown Women's Championship - her first title on the main roster, although she did have a little help.

The closing moments of the match saw Becky and Charlotte poised precariously on the ladder as they both tried to reach the title belt first.

Out came RAW Women's Champion Ronda Rousey and she toppled the ladder over, helping Asuka win in the process.

#4 EC3 vs Adam Cole vs Lars Sullivan vs Velveteen Dream vs Ricochet vs Killian Dain (Ladder match for the NXT North American Championship at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans)

These six men left it all out in the ring

NXT TakeOver: New Orleans saw six of NXT's top male Superstars battle it out to become the first ever NXT North American Champion. The match was awarded five stars by Dave Meltzer.

The ladder match was definitely one of the best NXT matches of 2018 and was also one of the most brutal matches of the year containing a number of nasty spots.

In any other year, this could have been WWE's most extreme match of the year (since the PG era). If you haven't seen this one, you should go out of your way to experience the carnage.

The match was won by Adam Cole of the Undisputed Era, who himself had a great year in 2018.

#3 Undisputed Era vs Pete Dunne, Ricochet and War Machine (NXT TakeOver: WarGames)

WarGames was brutal this year

What happens when you take Pete Dunne, Ricochet and War Machine, and put them inside War Games against the Undisputed Era? The answer is unadulterated carnage.

This year's WarGames match even topped last year's masterclass. NXT UK Champion Pete Dunne, North American Champion Ricochet and War Machine banded together after having enough of the Undisputed Era.

A part of the match ended up being four on three after Dunne was locked inside his cage on the ramp and unable to join the match until a referee came out with a bolt cutter.

However, when Dunne finally got involved, there was hell to pay. He brought out kendo sticks, trash cans and tables and all those weapons were used.

When the dust settled, it was Dunne, Ricochet and War Machine who stood tall after vanquishing the Undisputed Era.

#2 Adam Cole vs Aleister Black (Extreme Rules match at NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia)

Adam Cole vs Aleister Black contained some nasty looking spots

Despite WarGames and those 8 Superstars' best attempts to destroy each other, they just missed out on No.2 in this list. That has to go to Aleister Black and Adam Cole's extreme rules match at NXT TakeOver: Chicago.

Both men took a beating on the night as they threw everything but the kitchen sink at each other, almost literally.

Of all the nasty spots, one particularly brutal one was when Black sent Adam Cole back first into two chairs that were standing back to back with a Death Valley Driver. Another incredibly dangerous spot was Cole hitting Black with a superkick and sending the Dutchman crashing through two tables.

The match was eventually won by Aleister Black who hit Adam Cole with a Black Mass as the latter went to hit Black with a steel chair.

#1 Tommaso Ciampa vs Johnny Gargano I, II & III (NXT TakeOver: Chicago II & NXT TakeOver: New Orleans & NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 4)

This trilogy was a theater of brutality

Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano's feud in NXT was one of the best things going on in professional wrestling this year.

Their feud started after Ciampa turned on Gargano in 2017, after NXT TakeOver: Chicago when Ciampa turned on his DIY partner. They ended up giving us the most brutal WWE matches of 2018 during their feud.

Ciampa and Gargano met thrice this year and all three matches were brutal, with the two men proving that they were as adept at telling a story through wrestling and violence as anyone in WWE history.

They first met at NXT TakeOver: Chicago in a Chicago Street Fight which was won by Ciampa.

This was followed by an Unsanctioned Match at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans which was won by Gargano. Their last match this year was for the NXT Championship in a Last Man Standing match at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 4.

Ciampa won this match despite taking an ungodly beating after Gargano injured his ankle and was unable to stand.
