5 most unexpected moments from WrestleMania 34

The anticipation leading up to the 2018 edition of "the showcase of the immortals" was unreal, and WWE knew that in order to build an epic event, they had to pull off some astonishing moments.

While the many moments WWE pulled off this year were surprising, to say the least, not all were shocking in the best way possible, as many of these decisions by the WWE creative team were misplaced, confusing and just plain baffling.

On that note, here are five unexpected moments from WrestleMania 34:

#1 Charlotte was ready for Asuka

The only dream match that delivered at WrestleMania

The most important streak in women's wrestling came to a seizing halt in perhaps the greatest women's wrestling match in WWE history. At WrestleMania, Charlotte Flair became the only woman in WWE history to defeat Asuka in a wrestling classic.

While many expected WWE to preserve this mystic of Asuka and give her even more credibility, they chose to have Flair make her tap out to the figure eight leg lock. Now, where WWE goes from this point would be interesting as Asuka is now mortal and Charlotte has just gained a ton of momentum heading into 2018.

#2 The Phenom squashes The Franchise

A disappointing turn of events

When John Cena arrived at WrestleMania as a fan, many were glad to see WWE finally keep to their narrative decisions, as that decision built a mystery around whether or not Cena would clash with The Undertaker later on in the night.

And to the wrestling aficionados' delight, that match did take place. Although the layout for The Undertaker's appearance was fairly odd, just witnessing these two wrestling icons face each other at WrestleMania sent shockwaves throughout the WWE Universe.

However, no one could’ve predicted that Undertaker would squash Cena in an abrupt manner. This shocking move by WWE could only mean two things, either Undertaker and Cena are going to build towards a feud or this dream match had a 5-minute runtime.

#3 Nakamura's low blow

An unexpected moment

The initial build of this match was fairly lacklustre in comparison to other programmes on the show, but the WWE Universe didn’t care about the backstory behind this match, and only wanted a 5-star classic that would be raved about for ages.

However, WWE chose to flip the script here, which caused them to make an odd decision. That decision saw them produce a fairly average match that felt incomplete. It had the narrative reign prevalent on a night where wrestling was the real focus.

And that narratively shocking moment was the sight of Shinsuke Nakamura turning heel after a low blow. This decision might annoy the masses but if WWE is booking this narrative in a long-term sense, then Styles and Nakamura didn’t need to tear the house down tonight but save their best for a blockbuster rematch down the line.

#4 A child wins the Raw Tag Team Titles

A foolish decision at this point

James Ellsworth, Goldberg, Bobby Lashley, Rey Mysterio and Dean Ambrose were all massive stars the WWE Universe tipped to be Braun Strowman's mystery tag team partner at WrestleMania. However, WWE possibly delivered the most outrageous moment in WrestleMania history by having a child win the Raw Tag Team Title.

While this decision creates intrigue to tune into Monday Night Raw, it is an insult to the WWE roster, as there was an abundance of talent to choose from. WWE might have created controversy on the basis of "controversy creates cash" but here, it only created disappointment.

#5 Lesnar retains!

Blood, sweat, tears nothing worked for Reigns in New Orleans

The rumours were true, the build was realistic and the outcome felt set, but the biggest shocker of the entire night was the fact that Brock Lesnar retained his Universal Title. The supposed 'golden boy' of the company, Roman Reigns, lost once again to "the beast" in a terribly booked match which had the potential to steal the show.

However, from fans' disinterest to poor match layout, Reigns and Lesnar's efforts will go unnoticed as this match was set up to fail from the outset. And the fact that when Lesnar picked up the win was the only time fans showed interest in this match will relay a very strong message to WWE about Roman Reigns' run as a babyface.

Therefore, WWE has a plethora of options for Roman Reigns' rejuvenation and the best option is a heel turn, as his babyface run could've been summarised in one chant that was prevalent in this match, awful.
