5 movie characters that would make great WWE wrestlers

There are WWE superstars who have made a bold name for themselves inside the ring, yet also have gone on to create magic on the silver screen.

Two notable icons that come to mind include The Rock, as the action-packed agent Luke Hobbs in the Fast & Furious franchise, and Dave Bautista’s instellar performance as the exceedingly popular Drax the Destroyer from Guardians of the Galaxy. Both are compelling characters, and both actors have had successful careers with their unique personas inside the squared circle.

But what if it was the other way around? What iconic movie characters would fit in perfectly with the WWE’s current landscape? Perhaps a Marvel villain would face off for the intercontinental championship? Or maybe a Jedi might use the force to pull down the WWE championship in a ladder match?

The reality is that any character you could possibly think of could be on this list. However, there is some methodology to choosing characters, that is they are at least plausibly believable.

Let’s be honest, the WWE has come up with crazier gimmicks in its time and sold them very well, and surely the list you are about to read will be no exception.

#1 Randy 'The Ram' Robinson (The Wrestler)

Randy would have thrived with the WWE universe behind him.

Let start with a fictional wrestler. Randy “The Ram” Robinson, played by Mickey Rourke, was the lead character in the aptly named film ‘The Wrestler. It is a story about a washed-up icon of an old era of wrestling trying to regain some of his old fame and glory at the detriment of his own health.

Although with the potential that any movie character could be on this list, it only seems fair that such an iconic fictional wrestler gets his shot on the 'grandest stage of them all'.

#2 Bane (The Dark Night Rises)

Bane has strength and intelligence to his advantage.

Firstly, as there are multiple portrayals of the villain, we better clarify which Bane. So, let’s exclude the green muscle-bulging beast with a Lucha mask that graced the screen in Batman & Robin, and talk about the superb visualisation of the iconic villain portrayed by Tom Hardy in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Night Rises.

Bane has often been misrepresented as a thuggish muscle-flexing brute. Yet his backstory is one of oppression. Spending most of his youth in prison, Bane trained physically and mentally to be superior in every way, so that when he escaped, he could stake his claim on anything he wanted.

If you found him in the WWE, he could easily be introduced as the leader of a new faction, probably including some of his escaped prison inmates. A new reign of terror could be brought down on the WWE, as Bane tries to subdue the authority. Equally, he would make a terrific anti-hero as a ‘lone wolf’ within the roster.

#3 Beatrix Kiddo a.k.a 'The Bride' (Kill Bill)

Sitting on a wrecking ball of vengeance, Kiddo would have a great backstory.

Trained by a legendary martial artist, the Bride is on a mission of revenge and justice against those who would seek her demise.

OK, so what with the limb dismembering and the eye-plucking that unfolds in the films it may not be entirely suitable for the WWE universe to watch, or indeed for her competitors to set foot in the ring with her.

But somewhere between Beatrix Kiddo’s (The Bride) martial arts background, and her skills as an assassin, she could lead her abilities into becoming a non-lethal high flying, strong style submission specialist.

The blood splattered angel (as she could be known) would wield a mantle as the baddest woman on the planet and could be the leading force within the WWE. We will just have to hope that she never connects a blow with her finisher, The ‘five-point palm exploding heart technique’.

#4 'The Replicant' Roy Batty (Bladerunner)

Roy has a sinister and almost equally compassionate side to his character.

An odd choice you might say. Well if you haven’t seen Bladerunner, or you didn’t enjoy it then that is a plausible reaction.

Bladerunner is a now a cult classic and one of the all-time iconic sci-fi films. Set in an ambitiously futuristic 2019, an LA ‘Blade runner’ named Deckard Kane is tasked with “retiring” (killing) bio-engineered replicants that have illegally returned to earth. One of those replicants is Roy Batty.

Roy Batty for anyone who hasn’t seen the film is more or less an android that seeks to extend his own lifespan over the fear of dying. This leads to him wreaking havoc with superhuman speed and strength to find a solution.

Roy’s ability to be brutal, honest, calculated and caring would offer a magnitude of storylines on any side of the spectrum, heel or face.

Now you may think that the idea of an android running around WWE may be one step too far. Well believe it or not the legend that is John Cena once went under the gimmick known as the Prototype, 50% Man, 50% Machine.

#5 'The Man with no name'

A mysterious character is always going to garner a lot of attention

If you are familiar with Clint Eastwood, or spaghetti westerns, then you will understand the mysterious allure to the iconic character.

It would also seem that the WWE has either planned or unintentionally added elements of ‘the man with no name’ into several WWE personas, with the likes of The Undertaker and his mysterious charm with his Western look, or even ‘the wanderer’ Elias.

It may be that The Undertaker and those alike have worn out the gimmick, making it increasingly tough for ‘The man with no name’ to show. But surely a Wild Western gimmick would make for an interesting diversion.

The likelihood is that you may disagree with some or maybe all on this list. It’s also a fact the there are hundreds of movie characters that you could easily choose. But it comes down to your own individual relationship with movies that you love and how they reflect on your own characteristics, equally in the same way that certain wrestlers capture your imagination more than others.
