Nikki Bella and AJ Lee had a legitimate problem
AJ Lee was part of the Women's Revolution before it was given a name, she was the only female wrestler who refused to be sexualized by WWE and didn't just on the Diva bandwagon when Total Divas first premiered back in 2013.

Lee hated everything that The Bella Twins stood for and even stated in her acceptance speech for Diva of the year back in 2014 that she hoped that the WWE Universe would vote for a more deserving winner the following year, but once again it was The Bella Twins.
Lee tried to push the women of WWE forward but the WWE Universe wasn't ready for it at the time, which is why The Bella Twins seemingly got the better of Lee a number of times, but she has since gone on to become a success outside of the company. This could be one of the main reasons why AJ Lee hasn't made a return to the business over the past three years.
