5 reasons why Goldberg is not really a bad Universal Champion

Goldberg as the Universal Champion is ‘best for business’

It is no secret that Goldberg is not the best in-ring performer in the world. Yet, he still holds the top prize on the flagship brand of the world's biggest wrestling promotion.

Having spent a sum total of under 2 minutes in the ring in his two one-on-one matches since his comeback and a slightly longer duration in the Royal Rumble, Goldberg has often faced the wrath of the vocal internet wrestling community, who want the belt placed on the shoulders of a more deserving full-time WWE performer.

I believe that despite Goldberg's many flaws, he truly is the right candidate to hold the top prize in sports entertainment today. Here are 5 reasons why it is so.

#5 It makes the WrestleMania match feel more special

With this stipulation, Goldberg vs. Lesnar part III makes sense

The first time it happened, both men were on their way out of WWE and the fans turned on them, booing them out of the arena. The second time, it lasted a total of 1 minute, 26 seconds and caused mixed reactions among fans.

Why would we want to see the third edition of this underwhelming encounter? Of course, because there’s a belt on the line this time around.

Considering that this match is certainly not going to go on for long, we believe that the WWE put the belt on Goldberg to make fans invested in the encounter at hand. The title match at WrestleMania is a big deal and without it, the contest is just another Goldberg vs. Lesnar match.

The Universal Champion decides the course for the angles, plots and storylines over the next year and hence, the championship makes people care about the eventual outcome.

#4 It will bring back old WCW fans for WrestleMania

Fans will get to relive memories from almost two decades ago

At the peak of the Monday Night Wars, WCW introduced a monster who stepped through the flames, breathing smoke from his nostrils and mowing down his opponents in almost no time. In under a year, he would become world champion, defeating Hulk Hogan and claiming his crown.

Bearing a striking resemblance to Stone Cold Steve Austin, he would become WCW’s biggest star in a roster packed with legends. His name was Goldberg.

With fewer people tuning in every week, WWE needs all the viewers it can get heading into WrestleMania 33 in Orlando. With Goldberg returning and becoming the top guy in the company, fans of both WCW and the Ruthless Aggression era will tune in to watch their favourite Superstar.

It may not be the ideal way to go about things, but hey, it’s the most effective way.

#3 Goldberg looks like a champion

One can say that looks don't matter in wrestling, but they really do

Another past legend from the WWE and WCW, Kevin Nash, once said that ‘Vanilla Midgets’ will never be big money draws. He was referring to the smaller, more gifted in-ring performers who could work circles around performers like Goldberg, but looked like the Average Joe next door.

Be it Hulk Hogan, or The Rock, or Brock Lesnar or even John Cena, each of these performers looked like big, tough, imposing guys who were certified Superstars. They seem like a big deal on pay-per-view posters and actually manage to sell tickets for the event.

Goldberg fits this mould and is your definition of the classic tough babyface who cannot be stopped at absolutely any cost. A physique like his, even at 49, draws many casual fans to the WWE product.

#2 Retribution for what WWE did with Sting

WWE buried the icon Sting on their biggest stage

Everyone remembers the debacle that happened at WrestleMania 31. WWE brought in Sting, WCW’s biggest star (with the exception of Goldberg), only to have him lose his first match to Triple H.

It made absolutely no sense and just made Sting look weak during later storylines. Fans of WCW were angered by this, and with how other WCW stars had been treated by the company over time (such as DDP, and even Goldberg during his first run in the WWE).

This could be WWE's way of saying that they’re sorry, inviting the older fans to watch the product once

#1 WWE hasn't been able to create new Superstars

At 49, Goldberg may just be WWE’s biggest babyface
Ad

Sure, WWE has a host of new stars such as Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Charlotte, AJ Styles, Sasha Banks, etc. However, none of them have matched the level of success that wrestlers like Goldberg and his compatriots once enjoyed.

They may be stars, but they are definitely not Superstars.

Unfortunately, the last major Superstar WWE created may have been John Cena. This has been a constant problem with the WWE, and they’ve been forced to bring back part-time performers like Bill Goldberg to main event their bigger show over full-time talent.
