Could Mahal cause a massive upset, this Sunday?

A few years ago, Jinder Mahal was a jobber on Monday Night Raw, now he’s one of the most heavily featured superstars on Tuesday nights. Some don’t think he should be in the position he is in, but regardless of those opinions, Jinder Mahal will be competing for the WWE Championship at Clash of Champions.

The Modern Maharaja evoked his rematch clause especially for this pay-per-view and will challenge the current WWE Champion, 'the Phenomenal' AJ Styles.

AJ Styles is a clear fan favourite and because of that popularity, many are tipping the 'champ that runs the camp' to enter the new year with the belt. But as we all know, the WWE doesn’t always listen to the fans, it goes with whatever makes the most business sense. And as of today, Jinder Mahal is the best option SmackDown Live has, to be WWE Champion.

Here are 5 reasons why Jinder Mahal should win the WWE Championship at Clash of Champions.

#5 Establishes Jinder Mahal as a legitimate main eventer

It doesn’t matter how you do it, it’s just about getting the job done. And for Jinder Mahal, his profile would be incredibly bolstered if he could add another win over AJ Styles to his scalps of Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura. With the Singh Brothers banned from ringside, this is the perfect opportunity for WWE to show the fans how seriously they value Jinder Mahal.

In the past, interference and dodgy finishes have clouded Mahal’s victorious moments. This time, a clean win over AJ Styles would establish the Maharaja as a main event talent in his own right.

AJ Styles has had match of the year contenders with both John Cena and Brock Lesnar, the two biggest stars in the industry today. But the best thing he could do in the year of 2017 is put Jinder Mahal over cleanly in the last PPV of the calendar.

#4 Provides shock value

There’s a very small percentage of fans even considering the possibility of Jinder Mahal winning at Clash of Champions. Because of the manner in which he won the WWE Championship in England, many feel AJ Styles is set for a very long reign as champion. However, this is the exact type of scenario that the WWE loves to produce and swerve us on.

Jinder Mahal’s title reign was laughed at by some, but others saw the greatness in it. Being WWE Champion for 170 days implies the company saw the fruits of his labour and saw the business value in his reign as champion.

So, Jinder Mahal becoming a 2-time WWE Champion may surprise a lot of us, but from a business standpoint, it makes sense to them.

#3 AJ Styles has served his purpose

The Phenomenal One is arguably the greatest performer of our generation and by right, the WWE Universe show him the due appreciation every night. But the truth is, regardless of whether he’s champion or not, his fans will still support him.

So, a title loss to Jinder Mahal doesn’t do anything to his popularity. It just adds to his vulnerability, thus endearing us to support him even more.

Reports suggested that Jinder Mahal was set to hold on to the WWE Championship until WrestleMania next year. The only reason that changed was because the WWE wanted to give the WWE Universe a dream match in AJ Styles vs. Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series.

That 5-star bout has com & gone, and AJ Styles’ purpose for being champion is over. So, now it’s time to return the belt to the most entertaining champion we’ve had all year, the Modern-Day Maharaja, Jinder Mahal.

#2 To prove his reign wasn’t a publicity stunt

The fact of the matter is, many fans disregarded Jinder Mahal’s title run because they felt it was a publicity stunt. They felt the WWE only placed the belt on the 31-year-old to build up steam before the WWE India tour. A tour which needed the return of Triple H to help bolster its profile.

In fact, a month before the tour, Jinder was sent on a press run across the country, adding more fuel to the fire. Things took a turn for the worse when a few week later, he was defeated by AJ Styles for the championship.

Such a series of events only points towards the WWE using Mahal’s heritage as an advertising tool. For such speculation to be discarded, the Modern Day Maharaja must reclaim his WWE Championship at Clash of Champions.

#1 Sets up a feud with John Cena

It’s either going to happen in the near future or perhaps further down the line, but sooner or later, John Cena is going to become a 17-time world champion. His status among the greats and undying commitment to the company warrants one more record-setting reign.

And how big it would be for Jinder Mahal to be a footnote in such a historical moment. The WWE love nothing more than pitting John Cena up against a despised heel. In the WWE today, there’s no heel hated more than Jinder Mahal.

It’s a career landmark for any superstar to enter into a feud with John Cena. And for Jinder Mahal’s run as a top guy to be taken to the next level, he must engage in a battle with the Cenation leader.

Jinder Mahal vs. John Cena would be fresh, exciting and newsworthy. Book it.
