5 Reasons why The Miz is the best Intercontinental Champion in recent memory

The Miz has made the Intercontinental Championship more relevant than ever

Until not too long ago, The Miz was simply another wrestler in the mid card, who had fallen from grace after main eventing Wrestlemania 27. Fast forward to 2016, and he’s probably the best heel in WWE. Nobody had predicted this kind of resurgence in the Miz’s career and neither is anyone complaining!

The Miz won the Intercontinental Championship from Zack Ryder the night after Wrestlemania 32. And in the months since, he made the belt just as relevant as John Cena had made the United States Championship. It’s reached a point where taking the title off the Miz may just simply devalue the championship.

What has made The Miz just an A-list champion in recent times? We at Sportskeeda give you 5 compelling reasons, right here.

#5 Ability to get under your skin

The Miz is probably the last true heel in 2016

We live in strange times indeed. Heels such as Chris Jericho and AJ Styles are more popular than babyfaces like Roman Reigns, and dare we say, maybe even Dean Ambrose. The Miz, in such a day and age, remains the last true heel in WWE.

With the innate ability to get under the skin of both the babyface he is facing and the viewer watching at home, everybody always wants The Miz to be pulverised.

Miz’s genius lies in the fact that he can make a packed audience despise him with his cowardly ways and mannerisms. It’s been a while since we saw a cowardly heel who thinks he is far better than you are! The Miz is that man.

People pay money to see The Miz get beaten up. It’s an art in itself!

#4 Perfect understanding of character

Less spots, more storytelling makes The Miz special

As Stunning Steve Austin and The Ringmaster, Steve Austin was always a good worker but little else. It’s only when he discovered his true character... that of the Texas Bad Ass, that he ascended to the top of the pro wrestling world.

The Miz understands his role and plays it to absolute perfection. At a time when WWE has an entire Cruiserweight Division devoted to spots and flips, The Miz is a storyteller and hence, he stands out!

Each Miz match has heat, and it just makes the Intercontinental Championship seem that much more relevant. The stakes are raised every time, because of the Miz understanding his part, and telling a story that makes us care about the match that we are watching.

#3 Constantly improving in the ring

The Miz may be part of four Match of the Year contenders

At no point during his career, was The Miz ever considered one of the better wrestlers inside the squared circle. But one thing that nobody in the back can deny is that The Miz works harder at his craft than just about anyone else on the roster.

Constantly honing and improving his in-ring skills, The Miz has been part of some brilliant matches this year.

Be it the Intercontinental Championship ladder match at Wrestlemania 32, the Fatal Four Way (with Cesaro, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens) at Extreme Rules or his two brilliant matches against Dolph Ziggler; each one of the contests has seen The Miz give it his all.

While it may be argued that he was wrestling better workers than him on every single occasion, The Miz deserves credit for holding his own during each nail-biting match.

#2 Smackdown booking

The Miz may not have fared as well on Raw

While Raw and Smackdown are not really at odds, the blue brand simply fares better when it comes to booking talent. The Miz is one of the wrestlers who has benefited immensely from the brand split and to be fair, has helped Smackdown just as much.

While the roster for the blue brand is thin, The Miz ensures that we are entertained in every role he plays- be it a wrestler, Miz TV host, Talking Smack guest or heck, even Talking Smack host!

Smackdown has booked The Miz in the right roles, and the Miz has made the most of every opportunity given to him, making them simply must-watch!

#1 Infusing storylines with ‘shoots’

Many of The Miz’s storylines have been grounded in reality

In an age of scripted promos, where wrestlers break kayfabe on social media quite often, The Miz’s storylines somehow reek of real life tension.

Be it his long-standing rivalry with Daniel Bryan (that stemmed from a brilliant promo on talking Smack), or his many feuds against Dolph Ziggler, The Miz somehow makes every match believable. His incredible microphone skills add a whole new dimension to every single rivalry he partakes in.

The Miz vs Daniel Bryan is a dream match that can never happen, much in the vein of The Undertaker vs Sting. Thankfully, however, The Miz still has many years to go, and many feuds to participate in. And that’s ‘aweeesomeee’!
