5 reasons why The Shield could reunite in 2019

WWE has hinted at this, could it actaully happen?
WWE has hinted at this, could it actually happen?

The faction building in WWE has been exceptional over the last few decades, as Vince McMahon has created some of the most legendary stables and teams in wrestling history in just a matter of years, and that is impressive.

From DX to Team Extreme, WWE has been filled to the brim with legendary stables that have propelled the careers of the superstar in those groups, and when debating on the topic of who is the greatest stable of all time, it is hard not to consider The Shield in that light.

While the group might only be a few years old, The Shield is one the best things to happen to WWE in a very long time, as WWE took three of the most promising superstars in their developmental brand, gave them a badass gimmick and laid out such an intricate plan to success for them, it just couldn't fail.

Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns might be the most popular superstars in the modern era of WWE, and it is thanks to the mainstream attention they received when they were kicking ass every week as the hounds of justice back in 2012 all the way to 2014.

And it wasn't mindless ass kicking by the trio, as every booking decision by WWE took them one step closer to a new level, which led to three of these men going on to have successful careers that saw them become grand slam champions.

So with all that is going on in the news that WWE is bringing back Roman Reigns on Raw this week, could we see a return of the group? Now the truth is that The Shield reunions WWE have given us over the last few years have been poor in quality, as fans saw them for they were at the time. But now things feel different, as circumstances are different, so could we be looking at one last Shield reunion this year?

#1 From Heel To Babyface

Well, that was shorter than expected.
Well, that was shorter than expected.

The night that Roman Reigns announced that he would have to vacate his Universal Tite due to him having to step away from WWE to take care of his health, fans were shocked and saddened for the man they had become so used to seeing on their televisions every single week. It was a night that WWE had made more emotional with Reigns' Sheild brethren coming out to the ring to console him and do The Shield's fist bump one last time.

But who knew on that night WWE was going to execute one of the greatest and detested heel turns of all time, as after their highly emotional Tag Team Title win, Ambrose turned heel on Rollins in the most hated heel turn of the last few years. Who could forget Micheal Cole screaming "not on this night," as everything from the commentary to the significance of the character change from Ambrose was a standard of booking WWE has implemented in years.

But it was not meant to last as Ambrose's turn soon went from groundbreaking to lacklustre faster than you could imagine. So instead of WWE trying their best to revive Ambrose's heel turn, they went in the opposite direction and had Dean revert back into a babyface.

From supporting Seth Rollins in his Wrestlemania quest to WWE bringing back his old theme song, WWE seems like they have given up on making Ambrose a heel, and while it seems obvious that it could be due to their poor booking of his character, maybe it could be due to WWE wanting to reunite a babyface Shield?

#2 The Big Dog Makes His Return

Could this be the scenes at Wrestlemania?
Could this be the scenes at Wrestlemania?

The rise of Roman Reigns was something that wrestling fans had detested for a very long time, as WWE forcefully pushed Reigns into the limelight more times than they actually should have. And it clearly was not Reigns fault that his character was so hated for most of his run as the top guy in WWE, as WWE rushed him so much, we didn't get any time to connect to his character.

But when you recall Reigns booking before that one fateful night in Philadelphia at Royal Rumble 2015, the WWE Universe had actually accepted him as one of the future stars in the company. As his run at the 2014 Royal Rumble was his breakout moment, and his booking after The Shield had split saw him still receive the support from the WWE Universe. But it was after his Royal Rumble win in 2015, WWE had ruined his steady rise to the pinnacle of the company.

But when Reigns announced that he had to vacate his title due to his health not being in its best possible state, fans all over the world cast aside their hate WWE had forced them to build up over the years, and they remembered the times when Reigns was a true Somaon badass, back in the original days of the Shield.

With WWE announcing that Reigns will return to WWE this week on Raw, will it be to announce his return? Well, that is what fans are hoping for, as Reigns coming back healthy is what all fans are praying for, and announcing his return will be the cherry on top. Also, this might be a small building block in WWE assembling the pieces of The Shield. Furthermore, rumours are going around that Vince McMahon wants Reigns for return in time for Wrestlemania, so we could sure that something big will go down on Raw this week.

#3 Healing Old Wounds

Brothers never leave each other's side.
Brothers never leave each other's side.

Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins are best friends and even greater enemies, and that can only be said about a few wrestlers in the WWE, as think back to some of the greatest feuds in wrestling history. They all started with betrayal by a former friend or brother, rivalries like Shawn Micheals vs Triple H, Kane vs The Undertaker and Edge vs Christain, are some of the best examples.

And Ambrose vs Rollins was undoubtedly the hottest thing WWE back in 2014 after The Shield had been split up by Rollins' greed to ascend to the top of the WWE ladder, this rivalry gave us the best version of Rollins, and it gave us a version of Dean Ambrose that would become insanely popular.

And now all these years later, the feud between these former best friends is still relevant to fans and WWE, as WWE even tried recapturing the magic they created back in the day last year, but due to poor booking, didn't work the way many fans would have hoped for.

Now it seems like Ambrose's babyface turn could be WWE way of having Rollins and Ambrose reconcile, as over the last few weeks we have seen Ambrose fight Rollins battles, tell him he knows Rollins can beat Brock Lesnar and even asking Seth to have his back. This just can't be a coincidence as Dean trying to heal the wounds of his betrayal is an angle that is leading to a bigger story, and that could be a Shield reunion.

#4 Make The Most Out Of It

On his way out.
On his way out.

The contract of Dean Ambrose has become more popular than the man himself over the last few weeks, as WWE has made the announcement that Ambrose is not going to renew his contract with the company after Wrestlemania. That was news that shocked fans more than anything else that will happen this year, as Ambrose is guy WWE had been building as the top guy for many years, and now he is leaving?

Many believe this is an elaborate work by the higher-ups in WWE to create a narrative around Ambrose that would make him a top priority for fans on this road to Wrestlemania, but as the weeks go on by, it seems this is less of work more the truth.

The booking of Ambrose on Raw over the last few weeks feels like he is truly on his way out, as he is getting squashed, he is getting buried by Nia Jax of all people, and he has had no real direction, but could that all change?

Taking Dean's face turn into consideration, and his somewhat reconciliation with Seth Rollins, it seems like WWE wants to use Ambrose in one last narrative, and while a Shield reunion will be something we didn't need to see again after WWE has overdone it in the past, it could be the perfect swansong for Ambrose at Wrestlemania.

To just think that a few years ago Rollins, Reigns, and Ambrose were at the top of WWE and now we are not sure if Reigns will wrestle again or if Ambrose will be WWE superstar after Wrestlemania. So it will only make sense if WWE is going to lose Ambrose this year, they need to use him one of the last financially beneficial programmes they can, and that is getting the band back together and letting them run wild.

#5 The Building Has Begun

The trio that no one asked for.
The trio that no one asked for.

The one thing WWE has struggled with over the last few times they attempted to revive The Shield was getting the opponents for the popular trio wrong, from the makeshift team of The Bar with The Miz to Braun Strowman with Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler, WWE has really had no idea how to book proper six-man war.

And with recent rumours going around that the reason for a certain trio been put together, it seems likely the Shield will reunite, as the rumour states WWE has built up the team of Bobby Lashley, Drew McIntyre, and Baron Corbin to face The Shield. Now we all wondered why did WWE make such a confusing decision of having these three superstars randomly reunite at the Elimination Chamber to take out Braun Strowman, and with Reigns return, and Ambrose face turn, it seems the answer is clear as daylight.

This trio of Lashley, McIntyre, and Corbin seems like a terrible idea from WWE, if these are the rivals for The Shield in 2019, as we needed to see a proper faction to test the hounds of justice. But with rumours that Vince McMahon is pushing for Reigns to return at Wrestlemania to team with Ambrose and Stowman to take on those three men, it seems this is what we will get.
