Shawn Michaels: 5 things you should know about the Heartbreak Kid

You think you
You think you know HBK

The Heart Break Kid, Shawn Michaels, is a WWE Hall Of Famer and deservingly so. He's racked up so many accomplishments and nicknames throughout the years, he would be a legend if you only considered his first or second run with WWE as his entire career.

But there are a few things some fans might not realize about HBK. So let's see how well you know Shawn Michaels as we travel through this list of obscure facts regarding The Heart Break Kid.

#5 His original finisher was not the Superkick

Do you reme
Do you remember the pre-Superkick days?

Depending on who you ask, the Superkick is sometimes used like an exclamation point in an angry Facebook rant. But there was a day when the Superkick was all Shawn Michaels needed in order to secure a victory.

But there was a move Michaels utilized as a finisher even before he started tuning up the band. The Teardrop Suplex used to be HBK's weapon of choice. Michaels executed the move pretty well but it certainly didn't have the same panache as the Sweet Chin Music so it's probably a good idea Shawn Michaels switched it up. In fact, the Superkick used to be a set up for the Teardrop Suplex.

Not only is The Sweet Chin Music a better move because it looks nicer, but Michaels could do it to anyone. Can you imagine Shawn Michaels lifting Vader up for a Teardrop Suplex? I couldn't either unless it was in a video game.

#4 His eye injury explained

Bef
Before and after Kane

Shawn Michaels is one of the greatest WWE Superstars of all time, so he has naturally sustained a good amount of injury. He's broken bones, suffered lacerations, and if you've never noticed how his eyes aren't centered, then you might be the only one.

But his eye didn't always resemble a flounder fish as evidenced by his earlier matches where he was a pretty boy and not a grizzled veteran. HBK said it all started after taking a bad bump during his no disqualification match against Kane at Unforgiven 2004.

It wasn't apparent at the time, but over the years and after taking a few more heavy bumps his lazy eye problem became much more noticeable.

Therefore, Michaels sacrificed his own face for the sport of professional wrestling.

#3 He was fired in 1987

The ro
The Rockers were kind of troublemakers at first

In 1987, The Rockers were a hotshot tag team coming in from the AWA where they had previously held the Tag Team Titles on two separate occasions. Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty were looking to make a name for themselves in a big way in the WWF, but it wasn't long before they were wished the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Shawn Michaels broke a beer bottle over his head at a bar to prove he was tough and could party like a Superstar. Meanwhile, Marty Jannetty slept with a woman Terry Funk had his eye on and the two were sent packing.

The Rockers were brought back a year later and continued to be the babyface tandem fans know today. But the two would have gotten a better headstart if things would have worked out better for them in a political sense in 1987.

#2 Only WWE loyalist in the NWO

HN
HBK was in the NWO

Back in the glory days of the Monday Night Wars, the NWO had a truckload of members. There were so many people it looked like every time they were cutting a promo in the ring that a battle royal could be starting soon.

But when the nWo debuted in WWE it was because Vince McMahon wanted to crush the company. After all, he created it so he felt the need to destroy it. The initial line up of Hogan, Hall, and Nash didn't last very long and soon dissipated for one reason or another.

There were a couple new members switched into the group in an effort to make it work but nothing quite captured the old feeling of the NWO One of those members for a short time was Shawn Michaels who was never employed by WCW in spite of momentarily toying with the idea of jumping ship during the great battles between Raw and Nitro.

#1 He was tested positive for steroids

Apparent
Apparently, Shawn Michaels needed a little help

During the years of 1991-1996, the WWE was still very worried about steroids and had an independent lab test their Superstars. After all, Vince McMahon had to go through a rather messy steroid trial in 1994.

It might be surprising for some to know that Shawn Michaels test positive for steroids but in September 1993, that's exactly what happened. He was forced to vacate his Intercontinental Championship after his positive test.

Razor Ramon was given the IC Title in the meantime which let Shawn Michaels take it easy during his suspension and then get right back to work to head toward the Road To WrestleMania.

In the end, it kind of worked out for him because HBK and Razor Ramon ended up setting the score in a ladder match at WrestleMania X which will live on forever as one of the greatest matches of all time.
