Can we please ban unprotected chair shots from pro wrestling?

Fyter Fest was the sophomore effort from AEW. It was a brisk two and a half an hour show. It provided a variety of styles for all wrestling fans. You had comedy matches, exciting tag matches and very brutal hardcore matches. If this is the effort we are going to get from the secondary pay-per-view events, then we are in for some fun All Elite Wrestling shows in the future.

With some deep thoughts into why Jon Moxley wanted to do these hardcore matches again in my mind, I present my list of the top five most surprising moments of AEW Fyter Fest:

#5 Nyla Rose Loses Again

Nyla Rose could be a star of the Women's roster...if she can win a match
Nyla Rose could be a star of the Women's roster...if she can win a match

Nyla Rose is certainly a unique talent for All Elite Wrestling. Her size makes her stand out in any women’s division. It makes it really easy to portray her as a monster heel for the division going forward. After losing the Fatal Four Way match at Double or Nothing, it seemed that Rose needed a clear win over the two lesser known Japanese wrestlers in Riho and Yuka Sakazaki.

The match itself was an interesting mixture of styles. Rose got to showcase more of her unique skill set. It seemed like a handicap match with the two Japanese wrestlers working together with their high flying moves to try to defeat Nyla Rose.

It was shocking to see Nyla Rose dominate the end of the match just to watch Riho get a quick roll-up for the win. I am confused with where the Women’s Division is truly going. It seems they need the weekly show to really push the division forward.

#4 Darby Allin Gets A Star Making Match

How would Darby Allin look in his showcase match? Judging by the crowd reactions he is on his way to being a top star

Darby Allin certainly has sold himself as a daredevil. He has only being wrestling for three years after being a professional skateboarder. It seemed an interesting choice to have him make his AEW debut against Cody Rhodes. Could he truly handle the big stage?

It was an interesting twenty minute match. Cody spent a lot of the match simply punishing Darby Allin. It pushed Darby into the underdog role quickly.

The memorable moment of the match will be the attempted Coffin Drop. Darby attempted the move and landed back first onto the ring apron. That was very painful.

After surviving being zipped up in a body bag, Darby Allin was just able to survive and beat the twenty minute time limit. He certainly stood out in this match and the draw allows him to look good going forward. I will curious to see where Darby’s character goes from here once the weekly show starts on TNT.

#3 Shawn Spears Hits A Brutal Chair Shot on Cody Rhodes

This was a crazy risk from Cody. Why did he do this at Fyter Fest?

I feel that concussion risks are well known at this point.

As the AEW fans were chanting for five more minutes in the strong Cody-Darby match, Shawn Spears appeared. Despite no previous heat between the two wrestlers, Spears attacked Cody Rhodes. But the attack was something that we hadn’t seen in a long time in pro wrestling. We had an unprotected chair shot to the head.

As we have learned about CTE and concussions, chair shots to the head have gone extinct in mainstream wrestling. I understand it was a mainstream move in pro wrestling in the 1990s but with the learned health risks it has simply gone away.

There is simply no reason to put Cody Rhodes’ health on the line for any angle in 2019. It certainly was so surprising to see All Elite Wrestling to attempt to try this sort of dangerous risk.

#2 Jon Moxley Is Not PG Anymore

No one was having more fun then Jon Moxley in his match against Joey Janela
No one was having more fun then Jon Moxley in his match against Joey Janela

I cannot understand why Jon Moxley wanted to have matches like his match at AEW Fyter Fest.

Jon Moxley had a long history in companies like CZW for his hardcore wrestling matches. That certainly went away when he began his Dean Ambrose character. But it seemed he truly missed his violent Jon Moxley persona and showcased it after his contract expired from the WWE. We hadn’t truly seen this hardcore Moxley persona in the ring itself until Fyter Fest.

The match lived up to its brutal potential. We had barbed wire chair shots, leaps off of a ladder, table spots that were also covered in barbed wire, and bare footed people falling onto thumb tacks. Jon Moxley and Joey Janela lived up to their hardcore personas at Fyter Fest. I know it won’t be for everyone but at least Jon Moxley enjoyed every minute of it.

#1 Kenny Omega Gets His Revenge On Jon Moxley

It is less then two month until their match at All Out. I cannot wait until Chicago

As soon as the brutal non-sanctioned match ended, it was time for Kenny Omega’s revenge. After he was brutally attacked by Moxley at Double or Nothing, Kenny Omega needed some revenge. It made sense that Kenny Omega would get some revenge before his match with Jon Moxley at AEW All Out in Chicago.

It was an perfect way to end the show. He did a Double Stomp through a broken table. Omega used an electric guitar as a weapon. He attacked Moxley with a trash can and used Moxley’s own finisher against him to end the show. After this brutal beating, the show simply ended with Jon Moxley smiling. The hype for All Elite Wrestling All Out has really begun. I cannot wait for August 31st.
