Triple H's 2002 in WWE was certainly interesting, to say the least. After he spent nearly nine months on the sidelines due to a torn quad, Triple H returned in January to a thunderous ovation in Madison Square Garden.

The Game then went on to win the 2002 Royal Rumble match and defeat Chris Jericho to become the Undisputed WWE Champion at WrestleMania X8.

Just a few weeks later, The Game lost the Undisputed Championship to Hollywood Hulk Hogan at Backlash. When he became exclusive to SmackDown during the WWE Draft Lottery, Triple H resumed his feud with his WrestleMania opponent, Jericho.

This feud led to an incredible Hell in a Cell match between the rivals at the Judgment Day pay-per-view in May. But first, Triple H faced off against former WWE World Tag Team Champion D-Von Dudley on SmackDown.

The Dudley Boyz had been selected by separate brands during the draft. While Bubba Ray Dudley was on RAW, D-Von was repackaged into Reverend D-Von on SmackDown. He embraced a villianous reverend character who became Mr. McMahon's "spiritual advisor."

During the match between Triple H and D-Von on SmackDown, The Game seemingly had the bout won when he was about to hit the Pedigree. That being said, a distraction from Deacon Batista allowed Jericho to smash Triple H with D-Von's steel collection box. D-Von then covered the unconscious Triple H to score a monumental victory.
