5 things that WWE hides from its fans

The most integral part of the professional wrestling business is the fan base. Every promotion out there thrives on the strength of its fans, and WWE is no different. Being the largest wrestling promotion in the world, it is important for the company to keep its fans happy.

While that might sound like an easy job on paper, as wrestling fans, we are well aware of the demands that we have.

It would also be safe to say that the professional wrestling fan base is among the most demanding group of people out there. And one thing that the fans always want from a promotion like WWE is full disclosure.

Even though there is such a need among the WWE fans, the company tries to keep some things secret from its fans. In this list, we take a look at some of those things.

#5 Chris Benoit

The man that got erased from history books

This is an obvious entry into the list. While wrestling fans would remember Chris Benoit for being one of the best wrestlers of his era, what happened in his personal life has made Benoit an outcast in the WWE Universe.

The fans do address Benoit every now and then but WWE likes to keep everything related to Benoit under wraps.

The way in which they talk about WrestleMania XX and the Royal Rumble that preceded it are prime examples of how WWE are trying to erase Benoit from their history books. But the legacy he left in the wrestling business is not that easy to erase and somewhere deep down, everyone in the WWE is aware of this as well.

To an extent, CM Punk is also getting a similar treatment these days. But unlike what happened with Benoit, Punk would be welcomed back if he decides to take a U-turn and say goodbye to his mixed martial arts dreams.

#4 Blading to blood

Brock Lesnar has destroyed several WWE Superstars

Blood during wrestling matches always adds the extra dramatic impact. Although we understand that wrestling is scripted, the sight of wrestlers bleeding and wearing a crimson mask has always managed to suspend disbelief and engage the fans even more. The way in which the wrestlers bleed is one of WWE’s long-lasting secrets.

In the past, when blood was used, the whole blading process was something that all the wrestlers hid. These days, with the PG era, blading is a long lost art. But blood does flow on certain occasions and instead of hiding that the cut occurred, WWE hides blood as a whole.

From making edits in the videos to changing camera angles, WWE makes moves to keep its programming away from the violence and gore that the product was once known for.

#3 The relationships between the workers

nope, not brothers

Kane is the brother of Undertaker. Lita nearly married Edge. Hornswoggle is the son of Vince McMahon.

These are just a few of the kayfabe relationships that WWE sold us through its storylines. With the boom of the internet and the strong presence of dirt sheets, such kayfabe relationships are hard to build during this era.

What provided the base for building such storylines, the thing that blurred the lines between reality and kayfabe, was WWE’s ability to hide the real life relationships that existed between wrestlers.

Kane and Undertaker are not related to each other in real life, but a good portion of the WWE fans still believe that they are brothers. Similarly, Bo Dallas and Bray Wyatt are real life brothers, but in the kayfabe world, they are not related.

WWE is open to admitting certain relationships, but still likes to hide others just for the sake of keeping kayfabe alive on paper – even though it’s probably dead thanks to the internet.

#2 The chants

WWE has been editing out crowd reactions

The people who have attended live events and the people who see the wrestling shows at home have an entirely different experience. The people that attend live shows have a raw experience which is not altered by the agendas that WWE has.

The advanced technology and the team of experienced technicians have enabled WWE to show the TV audience what they want just the way they want it. For instance, if there are chants against Roman Reigns in the Arena, by the time the show is aired on television, WWE would’ve supressed the same as the promtion wants to project Reigns as a baby face.

It’s the age old trick of manipulating the masses through television and hiding chants, sign boards and a string of others things helps the WWE in this regard.

#1 The magical power of referees

From the storyline point of view, referees are people who are there to ensure that the wrestlers are competing within the ‘rules’ that are defined. Referees also have the authority to change the outcome of a match and decide the winner.

But this power is not what lets them into this list. Ever noticed the earpieces that the referees wear? Why do they have earpieces?

Just like the commentators out there, the referees have earpieces so that they can get instructions from backstage, which in turn will have an impact on how the on-going match turns out. It is easy to convey certain messages to the wrestlers through the referee since they are part of the act.

This magical power of referees is something that WWE tries to hide. Referees are projected as fragile pieces that get knocked out even if the wind blows hard.
