5 Things WWE NXT got right this week (Sep. 1, 2020)

The hunt for a new NXT Champion is still on
The hunt for a new NXT Champion is still on

WWE NXT shifted from Wednesday to Tuesday, as the first Super Tuesday special kicked off with a big six-man Street Fight.

Legados del Fantasma was all geared up to compete against Isaiah "Swerve" Scott and the new WWE NXT Tag Team Champions, Breezango, in what turned out to be a great match.

Candice LeRae and Tegan Nox looked to settle their differences, while Rhea Ripley laid down a huge challenge for Mercedes Martinez.

That’s not all, as "Thicc Boi" Bronson Reed looked to overpower Timothy Thatcher and show what he’s made of once again after a few spectacular performances on the "black and gold brand."

Last, but not least, Adam Cole, Finn Balor, Tommaso Ciampa, and Johnny Gargano competed in a 60-Minute Fatal Four-Way Iron Man Match to crown the new WWE NXT Champion.

In this article, we will look at the five things WWE got right on the first Super Tuesday episode of NXT.

#5. The Poison Pixie tries to clear her conscience on WWE NXT

Tegan Nox and Candice LeRae were once the best of friends. Like many of her other good friends, Nox lost LeRae too after she turned heel.

This week on WWE NXT, Nox spoke about her relationship with "The Poison Pixie" who now has a completely different attitude. Despite LeRae’s constant negative comments regarding Nox, it seemed like "The Girl with the Shiniest Wizard" wanted to make up with her former friend.

LeRae competed in a match against Kacy Catanzaro and looked fiery early on. However, an upset did not seem to be in the cards as LeRae managed to slow her down, trap her in a surfboard, and stomp her into the mat to pick up the victory.

After the match, "The Poison Pixie" took the mic and told "The Girl with the Shiniest Wizard" that she was ready to talk things out. So, she invited her to her house.

While the match was ordinary, this story seems to be taking an interesting turn. LeRae is a bitter antagonist at the moment while Nox has been one of NXT’s biggest babyfaces along with Rhea Ripley and Shotzi Blackheart. Will Nox be able to turn LeRae’s character around and make her the fun-loving babyface she was earlier?

It seems like the opposite could turn out to be possible, and LeRae could slowly turn Nox to the dark side instead. That could turn out to be great for both women, and their tag team could turn out to be a real threat to the other women of NXT.

#4 Breezango and Swerve bring a forklift to a Street Fight on WWE NXT

Legado del Fantasma was set to compete in a Street Fight against Breezango and Isaiah "Swerve" Scott on NXT. Santos Escobar, Raul Mendoza, and Joaquin Wilde took the fight to Tyler Breeze, Fandango, and Swerve immediately to try and knock them out early.

However, Breezango came in with new energy after becoming the WWE NXT Tag Team Champions. On Tuesday, the duo showed a much stronger side to themselves.

There was carnage everywhere as the competitors brought in weapons of all kinds. Meanwhile, Breeze and Fandango put their bodies on the line to take out the heels.

Legado del Fantasma tried to take control late in the match. Then, Imperium made a sudden appearance to beat down Breezango after losing the tag titles to them last week.

They continued the beatdown until Fandango and Swerve brought in a forklift to knock them out before Breezango climbed on top to wipe out the heels.

Finally, Scott hit the JML Driver on Escobar to pick up the a big statement win. The victory will allow Scott to remain the top contender for the WWE NXT Cruiserweight title.

Legado del Fantasma started strong, but they are slowly losing steam since Breezango and Scott have gotten together. Imperium’s arrival suggests that Marcel Bartel and Fabian Aichner will come after the titles sooner than later.

#3. Timothy Thatcher scores a big win on WWE NXT

In a backstage interview, Rhea Ripley challenged Mercedes Martinez to a Steel Cage match on WWE NXT. While the rivalry between these two women is relatively new, they have enough talent to ensure that they can pull off this story well.

In the ring, Bronson Reed geared up to compete against Timothy Thatcher. While Thatcher had a strong debut followed by a good rivalry against Matt Riddle, his stock has dropped over the past few months.

Reed managed to dominate the contest early on and use his power advantage to keep the technical Superstar down for some time. Thatcher found it difficult to break the chains as he has already been struggling in recent weeks while Reed has been on a great run.

As the fight spilled over outside the ring, Austin Theory appeared out of nowhere to attack the "Thicc Boi" and lay him out. This allowed Thatcher to lock in the Fujiwara armbar, forcing Reed to tap out.

This was a decent match that is slowly building towards a big NXT rivalry. Theory had a short run on WWE RAW, and it seems like he is back in search of a new opponent on WWE NXT.

Thatcher needed this win as he has lost momentum since his Fight Pit match against Riddle several months ago.

#2 The WWE NXT Championship Iron Man Match

The final match of the night was set for a 60-minute time limit as Tommaso Ciampa, Finn Balor, Adam Cole, and Johnny Gargano squared off in an Iron Man Match for the WWE NXT Championship.

No one took control of the match for too long as all four former NXT Champions tried to gain control. The action never slowed down as four of the men who’ve built NXT delivered one of the best matches we’ve seen on television this year.

After 25 minutes, Balor managed to get the first pinfall by executing the Coup De Grace on Cole. Next, Ciampa caught The Prince with the Fairytale Ending, but Gargano quickly stole the pinfall from his former partner.

"The Panama City Playboy" hit the Panama Sunrise on "The Rebel Heart" to take a pinfall for himself, ensuring that everyone stayed in the match for as long as possible.

Balor scored another pinfall by delivering the Coup De Grace to Ciampa, taking the lead with two pinfalls. While it seemed like The Prince would rule WWE NXT again, Cole fittingly took The Last Shot and picked up the final pinfall to tie with Balor before the time ran out.

This was a good match that lit up NXT and showed what the brand is capable of. Often we forget just how good the top Superstars of the brand are. This match showed that all four have the talent and stamina to go on for an hour.

#1. The build towards another WWE NXT Super Tuesday

The final match of the night ended in a tie. As Adam Cole and Finn Balor both picked up two pinfalls, the question remained: who would become the new WWE NXT Champion?

WWE NXT General Manager, William Regal, arrived and announced that Balor and Cole would have to face off one-on-one in a sudden death match to crown the new NXT Champion.

Many would question why WWE would stretch out a 60-minute match only to book another match. It sounds like a good idea to keep the tension high because another Super Tuesday is approaching.

"The Panama City Playboy" has already had the longest NXT Championship reign of all time and does not need to prove why he deserves another chance. While Ciampa could have been a good choice to take his place, he would be a fitting challenger for the title once a new champion is crowned.

Balor, on the other hand, is that NXT Superstar who can bring something brand new to the table with the NXT title. We could see The Prince rule NXT once again come next week.

It seems like WWE NXT won’t be able to reignite the rivalry between Balor and NXT UK Champion WALTER for some time. So, it could be a good idea to have Balor take over in Karrion Kross’ absence.
