Becky Lynch became the first full-blooded Irish woman to hold a championship in the WWE when she won the Six-Pack match at Backlash to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship. It hasn’t been an easy journey for Becky, who alluded to her struggles in her post-match interview where she thanked the fans for helping her getting to where she is.

Becky signed for NXT in 2013 and it’s been a gradual rise to stardom for her. As one of the famed Four Horsewomen, Becky is also one of the most beloved Superstars in the WWE, which was evident from the reaction she got at Backlash. From the moment that Becky and Carmella were the last two women left in the match, the Becky chants began and lasted till long after she had won the title.

With the Becky Lynch era beginning on SmackDown’s women’s roster, here are 5 things Becky Lynch fans may not know about her.

5: She’s wrestled all over the world including Japan, Europe, and Canada

Becky Lynch is actually one of the most travelled wrestlers on WWE’s roster right now. After debuting in her native Ireland in 2005, she quickly moved on to wrestle all over Europe such as England’s World Association Wrestling, France’s Queens of Chaos promotion and Germany’s German Stampede Wrestling.

Becky also toured Japan briefly in later 2005 where she competed in the International Women’s Gran Prix. She also won an 18-person Battle Royal later on in the tour and would highlight this tour later as one of her fondest memories from her early wrestling days. Lynch later toured Japan again in 2006.

She also wrestled across the Atlantic for Shimmer Women Athletes and Canadian promotion SuperGirls Wrestling.

4: Becky suffered a career-threatening head injury in 2006 and almost retired

Becky Lynch became the first full-blooded Irish woman to win a championship in the WWE at Backlash. She’s also one of the Four Horsewomen who led the Women’s Revolution is WWE and is one of the most over babyfaces in WWE right now. And all this could have never taken place dude to a career threatening injury Becky suffered in 2006.

Becky’s wrestling career had gotten off to a great start till she faced an inexperienced Finnish wrestler called Kisu in Germany in 2006. Kisu landed badly on Becky’s head, opening up a big wound and doctors thought that she could have brain damage. She was eventually diagnosed with damage to her eighth cranial nerve which left her out of action for almost a year.

Becky had serious side effects from the injury and suffered from headaches, vision problems and had a buzzing in her ear for months after the injury. The injury caused Becky to consider her future in wrestling and she no-showed at her scheduled return in 2008, stating that she had other priorities and didn’t return to action for almost five years.

3: She was Paige’s manager after her return to wrestling

Becky returned to the wrestling business as a manager and not a wrestler. Her natural charisma and beauty make her the perfect valet and she joined the all-women promotion Shimmer Women’s Athletes in 2011.

She came in and managed a woman who’s very familiar to WWE fans – Paige. Paige was wrestling at that time under the name Britani Knight. Becky only worked as a valet for Shimmer and didn’t return to in-ring action until she signed her developmental deal with NXT.

2: Becky used to work as an actress and has a degree in acting from Dublin Institute of Technology

In the time she spent away from wrestling, Becky went back to school to complete her education. She earned a degree in acting from Dublin Institute of Technology and also spent time and Chicago’s Columbia College.

Apart from working as an air hostess during her time away, Becky also worked as an actress in a number of plays and even as a stuntwoman in the History Channel show Vikings. Needless to say, Becky has used her education and acting experience to good use during her ascent in the WWE.

1: Finn Balor trained her

Becky Lynch and Finn Balor have been close friends for almost 14 years. Finn is also the person who trained Becky.

Becky Lynch joined Finn Balor’s wrestling school in 2002 with her brother, lying about her age so she could join. She fell in love with wrestling and quit college at 17 so that she could pursue a career in the industry.

Becky Lynch has often said that without Finn Balor’s guidance and help, there would be no Becky Lynch. She also credits Sheamus as a role model and as the person who convinced her to join the WWE.
