5 Universal Championship Challengers after The Greatest Royal Rumble

Who will step up to the plate next?
Who is next in line to challenge the Universal Champion?

At WrestleMania 34, the Internet Wrestling community assumed there would be a change of guard. A new Universal Champion would be crowned ending the part-time reign of the former Champion- Brock Lesnar. Lesnar defied the odds and triumphed at WrestleMania. Then came the Greatest Royal Rumble.

Fans and experts alike assumed that this would be the stage for a new champion. Except, it wasn't. After a controversial finish, Brock Lesnar remained champion.

So, who will dethrone The Beast and take the Championship from him? Who will be his next challenger?

In this article, we shall name five WWE Superstars that we deem worthy of this particular feat.

#5 Roman Reigns

We're certain that this particular feud is far from done

The only reason why the Greatest Royal Rumble match ended the way it did must be to prolong the feud between Lesnar and Reigns. WWE's top brass must be convinced that Reigns should be the next Universal Champion. He's one of the few people that gets a reaction, positive or negative from the WWE Universe.

In certain ways, Roman Reigns also matches up to the Beast Incarnate in terms of size and sheer musculature. While many fans may not necessarily buy into it, Reigns certainly looks like he could go one on one with The Beast. Maybe there's a rematch scheduled down the line between the two men.

Somehow, we're convinced that if Reigns does not pick up a victory during his third dance with Lesnar, he is destined to never pick up the Championship at this stage of his career. Therefore, we've chosen four other contenders for the coveted spot of the potential challenger for Brock Lesnar's Universal Championship.

#4 Bobby Lashley

Even though Bobby Lashley was a prominent name in the independents and in the world of MMA, he's spoken time and again how he was hounded about a potential match against Brock Lesnar. Fans wanted the two to square off either in the octagon or in the ring, down the line. There was never an opportunity for these two bulls to collide. Until now, of course.

Both Lesnar and Lashley are integral members of brand RAW at this stage. They're both exceptionally gifted individuals, who could bring elements from the MMA world to make their matches look supremely realistic. Theirs would be a believable contest.

At the same time, Lashley has just returned to the fold and it may be far too early to have him square off with a superstar like Brock Lesnar already. Therefore, we will pick some other probable contenders for the top spot.

#3 John Cena

Could Cena's 17th Championship reign involve the Universal Championship?
Could Cena's 17th Championship reign involve the Universal Championship?

To the victor go the spoils. John Cena made short work of the legendary Triple H in the opening contest of the Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. One assumes that this would put him right in contention for the prized Universal Championship that Brock Lesnar holds. Cena vs. Lesnar is a marquee feud, be it in 2005 or 2018.

Cena has an opportunity to break Ric Flair's record and become the 17-time champion by defeating the Beast Incarnate and taking the Universal Championship from him. If he wins, much like Lesnar, he too could become a part-time champion who only attends when it is required.

#2 Seth Rollins

In the Golden Era, the Intercontinental Championship would qualify a superstar for a shot at the world championship. Rollins has the crowd on his side and he's perhaps the hottest babyface on RAW at the moment. Unlike Reigns, fans would actually cheer him on if he faced off against Brock Lesnar.

Rolli probably doesn't size up with Brock Lesnar like Bobby Lashley seemingly does, but one can expect him to use his technique to dethrone the Beast Incarnate. Imagine the pop if Rollins were to actually defeat Brock Lesnar. The ovation would be deafening.

With this title change, WWE would have invested in a babyface they could actually rely upon to carry the company to brand new heights. The fans never accepted Roman Reigns, but they certainly do accept Seth Rollins as a credible contender.

#1 Braun Strowman

Can the Greatest Royal Rumble win earn him an opportunity at the Beast?
Can the Greatest Royal Rumble win earn him an opportunity at the Beast?

There is absolutely no doubt that Braun Strowman deserves a shot at Brock Lesnar. He's come up short in the past, but he's never had the kind of momentum that he does right now. In our opinion, fans would readily embrace him as the Universal Champion. Strowman has the look, the size and the credibility to dethrone Lesnar.

Could Strowman become the Universal Champion at Money in the Bank or SummerSlam? Could he represent the red brand going forward? Only time will tell.

What we do know for a fact is that it's Braun Strowman's time. He's been booked in silly segments with Nicholas for far too long and deserves to be given a shot at the top prize.

Who do you think could be the next Universal Champion after defeating Brock Lesnar?
