Asuka will challenge for the SmackDown Women's title

With WWE WrestleMania 34 on the horizon, we are building up to the event by taking a look at five key facts about every match at this year’s “Showcase of the Immortals”.

In this article, we focus on one of the biggest women’s matches in WrestleMania history – Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka.

Will “The Queen” reign supreme and end the Royal Rumble winner’s undefeated streak? Or will “The Empress of Tomorrow” claim the SmackDown Women’s title on WWE’s biggest stage?

#5 Asuka & Charlotte have the best PPV records in WWE

Charlotte's PPV record is only bettered by Asuka

Remember when Charlotte Flair was “The Queen of PPV” and she seemed unstoppable in singles matches at WWE’s monthly events?

Well, the win ratio she racked up during that time was very impressive, and the SmackDown Women’s champion has now won 22 of her 28 PPV matches in WWE (78.5% win ratio).

That tally is only bettered by Asuka, who has won all four of her PPV matches since joining WWE’s main roster in October 2017.

Wondering who is third on the list? It’s actually Finn Balor, who has won five of his eight PPV matches (62.5%). The next most successful female WWE Superstar, after Asuka and Charlotte, is Nikki Bella (53.8% win ratio).

#4 There hasn’t been a WrestleMania women’s singles match since 2007

Melina faced Ashley at WrestleMania 23

WWE’s women’s division has never been as popular as it is right now, but it’s still crazy to think that there hasn’t been a singles match between two women at WrestleMania since Melina defeated Ashley at WrestleMania 23 – a whole 11 years ago.

Since then, there have been 12 matches involving women at “The Show of Shows” but all of them featured more than two people.

That will change at this year’s event in New Orleans, with Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka and Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax both confirmed for the show.

#3 Asuka could become WWE’s oldest women’s champion in 18 years

Ivory won the Women's title at the age of 38

If Asuka defeats Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 34, she will become the oldest female champion in WWE since 2018 Hall of Fame inductee Ivory won the Women’s Championship 18 years ago.

“The Empress of Tomorrow” is significantly older, 36, than many of her fellow Superstars on Raw and SmackDown, though you wouldn’t know it from the way she performs every week.

Ivory was 38 when she won the Women’s Championship in October 2000 during a Fatal 4-Way match involving Lita, Trish Stratus and Jacqueline on SmackDown. She went on to hold the title until April 2001, making her the oldest female champion of the 21st century.

Since then, the only ‘veteran’ who has come close to reaching Ivory’s record was Natalya, who won the SmackDown Women’s title at the age of 35 in 2017.

#2 Only one person has cashed in MITB at WrestleMania

Seth Rollins cashed in at WrestleMania 31

The build-up to Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka has largely centred around the respect that both women have for each other, with WrestleMania 34 set to determine which one truly is the greatest female Superstar in WWE.

However, when you throw in the possibility that Carmella could cash in her Money In The Bank contract, there’s every chance that the much-anticipated match could become a Triple Threat.

If that happens, she will become just the second person to cash in at WrestleMania. The first? Seth Rollins, of course, when he interrupted Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 31 to win the WWE title.

#1 Asuka is undefeated in 257 matches

Asuka's undefeated streak even surpassed Goldberg's legendary tally

The biggest fact of them all is staring us right in the face: Asuka is an unstoppable winning machine who is undefeated in every single match she has had in NXT and WWE.

It was mentioned in a WWE promo package on 12 February 2018 that “The Empress of Tomorrow” has won 240 matches in a row – a tally that has now reached 257 matches, including live events.

Assuming she doesn't lose over the next couple of weeks, the former NXT Women’s champion will be undefeated in 914 days by the time WrestleMania 34 comes around.
