RVD was a rocket full of momentum since he debuted in WWE in 2001, and was poised to become the next big star of the company. He instantly became a main event fixture and started feuding with Triple H for the Big Gold Belt towards the final quarter of the year. This feud saw a very odd build, as Triple H did everything possible to verbally eviscerate Rob Van Dam and all his accomplishments.

Indeed, this feud would absolutely kill the momentum of the up and coming star. He lost his championship match at Unforgiven 2002 due to shoddy interference from Ric Flair. Even though a loss like that can be explained away, RVD botched one move which would sever his ties with HHH.

In the inaugural Elimination Chamber match at the 2002 Survivor Series, RVD accidentally crushed HHH's throat after botching a Five Star Frog Splash. After that, both HHH and RVD would fight to be number 1 contenders to Shawn Michaels, but HHH would win and send RVD packing to the mid-card.
