5 wrestlers who can be WWE 'Superstar of the year' 2017

2017 has been a great year in WWE. The year, as like any other, has seen many ups and down. We have seen a number of classic matches this year -- some name wise and some quality wise.

Many superstars showed what they are capable of if given the chance. Since we are just one month away from bidding adieu to 2017, let's take a look at who are the top five superstars of who created a buzz throughout 2017.

#5 Jinder Mahal

Although not the most popular choice in the list, Jinder Mahal has seen the whole landscape change upside down. From losing to Mojo Rowley to holding the WWE championship for 170 days, Mahal has had a fantastic year. "The Modern Day Maharaja" lost to Mojo Rowley on April 11 edition of Smackdown Live. On April 18, he became the no. 1 contender for the WWE championship.

If this sudden push didn't surprise everyone, he then went on to beat Randy Orton at Backlash PPV. He defended his title against "The Viper", twice. Not only that, he defeated AJ Styles on May 16th edition of Smackdown Live. He even defended his title against Mr Money in the Bank, Baron Corbin.

He would then defend his title against Shinsuke Nakamura, twice. Although he hasn't won all his matches clean, he won them nevertheless. Mahal's reign finally came to an end when AJ Styles defeated him on Nov 7 edition of Smackdown Live. Despite that, he is a strong contender for Superstar of the year.

#4 Neville

Neville made his WWE return in December 2016, however, with a different attitude. Neville turned heel and gave his character a much-needed exposure. He billed himself as the 'King of the cruiserweight' and rightfully so. He captured the Cruiserweight Title from Rich Swann at the Royal Rumble PPV in 2017.

Since then, he single-handedly carried the cruiserweight division. Unlike others in his division, Neville developed a character which the crowd interacted with. He had an amazing rivalry against Austin Aries, beating him clean every time. Neville's reign came to a halt at 197 days when Akira Tozawa defeated him on Raw. He regained the title at the Summerslam.

Neville then finally lost his title to Enzo Amore at No Mercy PPV. However, he later reportedly walked out and his status with the company stills hangs in a balance.

#3 Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns started the year feuding against Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho for the Universal Championship. He couldn't win it thanks to interference from Braun Strowman. He was the last man to be eliminated in the Royal Rumble PPV. His first big win came at Wrestlemania 33 where he defeated the Undertaker, becoming only the second guy to do it.

He then resumed his feud with Braun Strowman which will probably go down as one of the best. They were involved in a lengthy feud, producing high-quality matches. Reigns then challenged Brock Lesnar at Summerslam PPV along with Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman in a losing effort. Roman Reigns then moved on to The Miz and the Bar which ultimately led to the much awaited Shield reunion.

Roman Reigns could not compete at the TLC PPV due to an illness. He however returned and faced The New Day at Survivor Series PPV as part of the Shield in a winning effort. On 21 November, Roman Reigns defeated The Miz to become the 17th Grand Slam champion.

#2 AJ Styles

AJ Styles started the year as the WWE Champion. However, he lost the title to John Cena in the very first PPV of 2017, Royal Rumble. His match with Cena will probably go down as the best match of 2017 in WWE. AJ Styles failed to capture the title at Elimination Chamber, losing to Bray Wyatt. He was then involved in a feud with Shane Mcmahon.

Despite a mixed reaction to the feud, it turned out to be the best match of Wrestlemania 33. He then feuded with Kevin Owens for the US Title. The segment was underwhelming as both of the wrestlers were capable of lot more. The title changed hands between them three times with Styles eventually winning the feud after defending it against Owens at Summerslam PPV.

Styles lost his title to Baron Corbin at Hell in a Cell PPV which also involved Tye Dillinger. At TLC, a Raw-exclusive PPV, Styles lost to Finn Balor in a great match. On November 7, Styles defeated Jinder Mahal to become a two time WWE Champion. He faced Brock Lesnar at The Survivor Series PPV in another colossal effort. Styles lost the match but pushed Brock Lesnar to a match that was longer than all his matches in 2017. Styles started the year as WWE Champion and might just end it as the champion.

#1 Braun Strowman

Braun Strowman is probably the hottest commodity in WWE right now. Braun started the year feuding with Roman Reigns. In the Royal Rumble match, he eliminated seven superstars before being eliminated by Baron Corbin. Strowman carried his undefeated streak from 2016 to 2017. His streak was ended by Roman Reigns at Backlash PPV. He was involved in two high profile matches with Big Show on Raw.

In the beginning of the year, Strowman was involved in a feud with Reigns. The feud was a huge boost for Braun as he received very positive reactions from the crowd. Strowman faced Brock Lesnar at Summerslam PPV in a fatal four way also involving Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe. "The Moster Among Men" was the shining part of the match and then ultimately challenged Lesnar in a one on one match at No Mercy PPV.

Despite being booked so strongly, Strowman lost to Lesnar which many thought he should have won. Despite the loss, Braun was still over with the fans and was involved in a feud against The Shield alongside The Miz, The Bar, and Kane. At TLC PPV, his team turned on him and put him through a garbage truck.

Strowman made his return two weeks later going after The Miz and Miztourage. At Survivor Series, Raw's team won the 5v5 traditional elimination match with Strowman and Triple H being the sole survivors. In the match, Strowman eliminated Nakamura, Roode and Randy Orton. After the match, he, however, attacked Triple H who turned on team captain Kurt Angle.

Braun Strowman turned from squashing jobbers to putting on great matches with anyone.
