Some wrestlers have gone beyond the call of duty for their theme songs

Wrestling theme songs are one of the most important parts of a professional wrestler’s gimmick. A great theme song can play a huge role in helping a wrestler get over with the fans and really form a connection. A bad one, on the other hand, can even kill off a promising career.

Today, the WWE creates custom themes for most of its roster and this level of personalisation has really helped younger talent, by giving them a helpful leg up at the start of their WWE careers. Finn Balor is a great example of how a wrestling theme can elevate a superstar.

Some wrestlers take this process one step further. They add their own unique touch to their theme music by performing on their entrance tracks. There have been numerous instances of this throughout the years, and we’re here to look at some of the most famous ones.

So, without any further ado, here are 5 wrestlers who have performed on their own theme songs:

#5 R-Truth

I don’t like R-Truth. I think the guy is one of the most annoying things about the WWE and one of the reasons for this is his theme song. The whole “What’s up? What’s up?” nonsense really tends to grind my gears.

But, it seems like I’m a small minority when it comes to this, as the Ron Killings’ unique brand of fan interaction seems to have got him and his theme song over. His shenanigans almost always get him a positive reaction and he has used his rap skills to perform numerous entrance themes for himself through the years.

He may not command the respect he once did as the first ever black person to hold the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, but Truth still seems to hold a special place in the hearts of wrestling fans around the world. Even I don’t mind the guy if he just stops with the bloody rapping.

Check out the song above if you want to witness R-Truth’s musical genius.

#4 Enzo Amore

Enzo Amore and Big Cass became a sensation on the WWE’s main roster when they brought their NXT momentum with them to Monday Night Raw. A large part of this momentum? A New Age Outlaws like entrance theme complete with the duologue.

Enzo plays the role of Road Dogg in this comparison while Cass takes up the mantle of Billy Gunn. Unlike The D-Generation X duo, however, Enzo & Cass’ theme song actually has some lyrics which are performed by the Bonafide G and the Certified Stud. Or is it Certified G and Bonafide Stud? I don’t really care.

Their antics have gotten old as they haven’t been able to backup their mic skills with in-ring victories and tag team gold so until they do, they can take their fancy theme music and shove it where the sun don’t shine. If you want to hear the song, check out the link above.

#3 John Cena

If you don’t know about this one, how and why are you even reading this article? John Cena – the biggest Superstar in the world today – originally started off with a rapper gimmick and that was what gave rise to his theme songs.

Performing on two of his themes – the latest of which he’s used for 819 million years now – Cena puts his rapping skills to good use by spitting some hot fire. No, I’m just kidding, it’s actually pretty mediocre rap music that has become as stale as his character over the years.

You can check out his “latest” theme – My Time is Now – above to hear the kind of musical skill which helped the Leader of the Cenation release a whole rap album. To be honest, his old theme – The Doctor of Thuganomics – was probably better. Anyway, good on you, John.

#2 Shawn Michaels

Can you imagine anyone singing Shawn Michaels’ iconic entrance theme? Of course, you can’t. That’s why it’s iconic, after all. But, Mr Heart Break Kid very nearly didn’t perform the theme as he wasn’t comfortable with the singing.

He’s been using the song since the 1990s and while he was very much a Sexy Boy back then, it makes for a little awkward viewing when you see videos of Michaels prancing around to this song in his late 40s.

Regardless, it’s pretty great that HBK pulled off such an accomplished feat to create a theme which has withstood the ravages of time. Although I think Kurt Angle’s version – Sexy Kurt – is much better, you can check out Michaels’ theme above.

#1 Honky Tonk Man

The Honky Tonk Man’s whole gimmick was an Elvis Presley rip off, so are you really surprised that he’s coming in at number 1 on this list for performing his own theme song? Of course, you shouldn’t be.

The legendary Intercontinental Champion’s theme – Cool, Cocky, Bad – was as widely hated as his character but in a good way. He was one of the greatest heels the world of professional wrestling has ever known and it was all down to his dedication to the character. Including the theme song which you can check out above.
