Following Goldberg's match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33, the former WCW legend was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Paul Heyman. He later went on to face The Undertaker in a match in Saudi Arabia, before taking on Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam 2019.
After six months of inactivity, Goldberg made his return via satellite on an episode of SmackDown. He challenged The Fiend for a match in Saudi Arabia for his Universal Championship.

Goldberg was never given a rematch for his title after it was taken at WrestleMania 33, so it made sense for him to finally be handed a shot at Super ShowDown. At the time, The Fiend was undefeated and Goldberg became the first person to pin the star when he won the Universal Championship in Saudi Arabia.
Goldberg also became the first person to win a WWE Championship after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame following this victory.
