The Undertaker and Hell in a Cell have been almost synonymous...

With the demonic steel structure and all of its bloody history, comes an inherent sense of occasion.

Traditionally, Hell in a Cell has always been a big deal in the WWE. Whether it be Kane's enthralling debut, Mick Foley/Shane McMahon's respective leaps of death or the numerous times the Undertaker made the stipulation his own.

And even though the pay-per-view has been loaned out to the Blue Brand exclusively this time around, there's no reason why it can't deliver on all of the hype surrounding it again.

But over and above just the scheduled match-ups, unexpected returns also add greatly to the novelty of the event.

And in the WWE, as you well know, you're just a stone's throw away from a roof-raising return.

Why should Hell in a Cell be any different, then?

On that note, here are 5 surprise returns that could happen at the pay-per-view.

#1 Paige

This feud could liven up the SmackDown Live Women's division
This feud could liven up the SmackDown Live Women's division

The Anti-Diva put out feelers about returning to the WWE in August, saying that she should be cleared by the doctors in the next couple of months.

And in case you hadn't noticed...time's up.

Does this mean that Paige is in line for a return at Hell in a Cell?

With the SmackDown Women's Title being passed on from one uneventful reign to another, I think we can agree that Paige's return would be a welcome sight.

Plus, a feud between her and Charlotte, two of the Women Revolution's leading protagonists, would be money.

#2 The Undertaker

Could this (finally) be the pay-per-view when the Undertaker returns?
Could this (finally) be the pay-per-view when the Undertaker returns?

The Undertaker has been rumoured to return to the WWE for one last match ever since he stared at the lights for Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33 and those claims have only solidified since he was sighted boarding a flight to SummerSlam.

But the fact that his return didn't materialize then only led to continued speculation as to when the trademark gong will actually sound in the WWE again.

Could it, finally, be at Hell in a Cell?

For one, it would be an unexpected swerve as people — for some reason — keep expecting him to show up only on the Red side of things.

Also, there's this small matter of his history with Shane McMahon and Hell in a Cell to consider, too.

#3 Stephanie McMahon

Stephanie to fill Shane's void?
Stephanie to fill Shane's void?

The Billion Dollar Princess made her way out to help Vince McMahon to the back after he'd been viciously assaulted by Kevin Owens, and while some chalked that up to concerned daughter coming to the aid of her father, the WWE could have been teasing her potential involvement in SmackDown Live with it.

After all, Shane McMahon's run as the Commissioner of SmackDown Live seems to be at an end and someone needs to replace him.

And if there's something we've learned about the McMahons, they tend to keep it in the family when there are positions of authority — no pun intended — up for grabs.

#4 Vince McMahon

Will Vince be back for revenge on Kevin Owens?
Will Vince be back for revenge on Kevin Owens?

Although the Boss just appeared on television a few weeks back and ate a nasty beating from Kevin Owens, this still counts as a return as no one would really be expecting him back so soon.

But with his own son fighting to defend the honour of the family name against his assailant — inside a box of steel, no less — it stands to reason that he may make his presence felt on the night's proceedings.

Perhaps it's to cost Kevin Owens by distracting him at a crucial juncture during the match or maybe even get his hands on him in revenge.

As we've heard many times before from the Superstars in his employ, Vince never asks anyone to do something that he wouldn't do himself.

#5 Triple H

He may be a corporate figure now...but he's still an a** kicker when he needs to be
He may be a corporate figure now...but he's still an a** kicker when he needs to be

Much like how he practically gift-wrapped Seth Rollins a WWE Championship run, only to screw him over later when he felt he'd been let down, accepting the Game's help is a double-edged sword.

And it's fair to say that Kevin Owens has fallen well short of expectations.

Ever since being handed the WWE Universal Championship, he's been squashed by Goldberg, packed off to SmackDown Live and lost out on the United States Championship to AJ Styles.

And to compound matters, he also took it upon himself to assault Triple H's 73-year-old father-in-law.

Assuming Triple H will be working a program for WrestleMania next year, perhaps it's time that he shows up on television sooner than later.

Kevin Owens, you've been warned!
