Sometimes, it's important to know when to hang up the boots. Some WWE legends have had fairytale endings to their career, while others, not so much. We've seen incredible comebacks, but more than anything, we've seen a lot of legends wrestle far past their prime and more importantly - their physical capability.

It's hard to put down such legends, primarily because of all that they've done for the business. There's no doubt that the legends we list here have cemented their place in history and will forever be remembered.

However, this is where the line needs to be drawn. It's important to know where legacy is and when it's clearly time to hang up the boots. In this list, we take at five wrestlers who are past their prime and for various reasons, shouldn't lace a pair of boots again.

They've left their mark, and now, it's time for the new generation to shine.

#5 Goldberg

Already with two wins against Lesnar, the Universal Champion prepares for his final battle against The Beast Incarnate.

In Goldberg's case, it seems almost 100% certain that he is done. There were no complaints with regards to his comeback, and he undeniably worked very hard to make it happen.

He admitted in his interviews prior to WrestleMania 33 that he was going through an immense amount of physical pain to get back into ring shape and do what he was doing. He made it clear from the start that it was for his son, and in his last run, he managed to become Universal Champion and conclude his feud with Brock Lesnar.

And what a match it turned out to be. 5 minutes of non-stop action, with the crowd on their feet the entire time. It was the first time that Goldberg had ever been pinned clean in his career, and he did the right thing by putting Lesnar over.

He has his place in the WWE Hall Of Fame, and hopefully, that will be the end of his storied career.

#4 Shane McMahon

Shane McMahon isn't past his physical prime per say, but there's a good reason why we feel he should hang up the boots. We understand that he likes wrestling on the big stages, especially WrestleMania.

Since 2016, he's always been in featured match-ups and even represented SmackDown Live three years in a row at Survivor Series. However, he's more suited to an on-screen authority role, and that's exactly where he should stay at.

Ignoring the fact that he isn't the best in-ring worker, it's better off that he stays in his role so that younger talent can take that important spot at WrestleMania and beyond.

#3 Lita

Again, before anyone gets angry, we'd like to state that Lita is without a doubt, one of the most important female figures in WWE history. She's an undeniable trailblazer who influenced an entire generation of women.

However, her Royal Rumble and Evolution appearances seemed to show that she's past her athletic prime. She'll always be remembered as the daredevil female superstar who raised the bar for women's wrestling. However, wrestling in 2019 just shouldn't be an option for her at this point.

#2 Shawn Michaels

Shawn Michaels had a fairytale retirement in 2010. In an incredible storyline, he pursued the Undertaker for one last match at WrestleMania, reaching new levels of obsession. He put his career on the line against The Phenom and main evented WrestleMania one last time.

He lost to Undertaker, officially ending his storied career. For eight years, he refused any offer or thought of a return, being happy with the way it ended. However, a great deal of money from Saudi Arabia finally bought him out of retirement, as he had a decent match against the Brothers of Destruction while teaming with Triple H.

Here's the problem. Despite the fact that he exceeded expectations, it was clear that he wasn't the same HBK that he was before. Things were simply too different this time around, and even after the match, you can see him telling Triple H "We're too old for this".

Hopefully, he sticks to retirement and the memories of Crown Jewel are forgotten.

#1 The Undertaker

It wasn't going to be anyone else was it? For years, fans have been wondering when The Undertaker will retire. It seemed like the answer had finally come at WrestleMania 33, when Roman Reigns took on The Undertaker in a non-title match, becoming only the second person to beat him at WrestleMania.

And that seemed to be that. He took off his gloves, put his jacket and hat in the middle of the ring and went to kiss his wife Michelle McCool, breaking character on WWE TV for the first (and only) time.

WWE even seemed to assume that he retired, but what do you know? One year later at WrestleMania 34, he's back! And it's all for less than 3 minutes. He would go on to have a few more matches in 2018, continuing to prove that he's far past his prime.

From a personal standpoint, it's hard to watch because you don't want to see legends like The Phenom tarnish their legacy by staying on longer. Hopefully, the end of his career comes soon and it's a fitting one.
