5 WWE Superstars and their rumored backup WrestleMania 34 opponents

It's that time of the year again when The Game returns for an obligatory match.
It's that time of the year again when The Game returns for an obligatory match.

Absolutely anything can happen in the fickle world of pro wrestling. Plans in the WWE change like Paul Pogba's hairstyle and most of the times, the company has no control over the situation at hand.

All criticism aside, you've got to feel for the hated folks working in WWE's writing team as injuries and a moody Vince McMahon can strike at any time and revamp all existing arrangements.

Various plans for WrestleMania 34 itself have drastically been altered in the past few weeks due to various reasons. Creative, though, is well prepared in cases of a crisis, and have jotted down a host of backup plans for the biggest show in WWE's calendar year.

We take a look at the most prominent ones:

#5 Triple H: Braun Strowman

What was the purpose of booking this in the first place?
What was the purpose of booking this in the first place?

The seeds of an unlikely clash between the Cerebral Assassin and the Monster Among Men were planted at Survivor Series last year when the latter laid out the WWE COO after a frustrating end to the men's Survivor Series elimination match.

WWE digressed from the apparent angle and have instead chosen to resume a long-term storyline between Ronda Rousey, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon.

With Kurt Angle set to guide Rowdy in her WWE debut, and WWE extensively highlighting the storied past between Angle and Triple H, a rollback of plans seems highly unlikely now.

But, if anything unfortunate were to happen at the very last moment, Strowman could very well step in to save the day. However, that's not the only match he's rumored to be involved in...

#4 Braun Strowman: Brock Lesnar, Samoa Joe or IC Title

The main event fans deserve to see.
The main event fans deserve and want to see.

As of this writing, Braun Strowman is WWE's wildcard. The most over superstar currently across all brands is himself being kept as a substitute for Roman Reigns if the Big Dog were to be removed from WrestleMania's Universal title match.

Any damaging evidence against the #1 contender for the Universal title in the on-going steroid trial could force the WWE to hand Strowman another opportunity to beat Brock Lesnar, but this time, it could be at the grandest stage of them all.

WWE is just buying some time with the impromptu Elias/Strowman programme and will take a definite call sooner rather than later.

Strowman is also in line to face Samoa Joe if the former NXT Champion returns from his foot injury by WrestleMania weekend and even if that fails to come to fruition, WWE would end up adding both Strowman and Elias to the IC title picture, making it a five-way dance with Balor, Rollins and of course, The Miz for the championship.

#3 Charlotte: Asuka

Now that's a 5-star classic waiting to happen!
Now that's a five-star classic waiting to happen!

The Empress of Tomorrow seems destined to win the women's title, but the color of the championship belt she is expected to hold in the near future is still in question.

Despite kickstarting a feud with Alexa Bliss on Raw this past week, the undefeated superstar has still not yet officially chosen her WrestleMania opponent, and the window is still open for a sure-shot classic against Charlotte.

Flair revealed in an interview with Sky Sports that she wants to face the former NXT Women's Champion at WrestleMania, possibly hinting at the clash between stars who come from two really diverse cultures.

Charlotte is scheduled to face Ruby Riott for the title at the upcoming Fastlane PPV and there is no word on what's in store for the Smackdown Women's Champion on the road to WrestleMania apart from a potential show-stealer against the Japanese Sensation.

#2 Alexa Bliss: Nia Jax

Nia Jax needs her crowning moment before it's too late.
Nia Jax needs her crowning moment before it's too late.

Charlotte taking on Asuka would naturally free up the Raw Women's Champion for a bout against her real-life BFF, Nia Jax. What makes Jax vs Bliss even more plausible now is the fact that the Goddess has seemingly replaced Jax with James as her on-screen accomplice.

Letting Asuka and Charlotte do their thing in New Orleans will solve the Jax conundrum and would finally enable the towering giant to win the title she should have won ages ago.

However, WWE seems to be going towards an Asuka vs. Bliss matchup, with the possibility of Jax still being added to the match despite coming off short against Asuka at Elimination Chamber.

As a fan, Charlotte vs Asuka for the Smackdown women's title sounds way more alluring.

#1 John Cena: Rey Mysterio and Samoa Joe

Cena vs. Taker is still pencilled in for WrestleMania. Phew!
Cena vs. Taker is still penciled in for WrestleMania 34. Phew!

If everything does go according to the script then John Cena will finally face Undertaker at WrestleMania. The build-up for this dream match will be done on Tuesdays as SmackDown Live is lacking a big-name feud heading into the show.

Cena's misleading promo on Raw, Undertaker playing coy regarding the match at a recent fundraiser, and reports from Wrestling Observer all but confirm the dream match happening at the stage it should have years ago.

The ambiguity still remains though and WWE has a bunch of ideas to work with on the drawing board. Cena pitched matches against Rey Mysterio and Samoa Joe to creative, which were both reportedly shot down for the Taker bout.

Mysterio is still in contention to go up against the Cenation leader yet again despite suffering an untimely injury at an indie show. But as things stand, Taker vs Cena is a certain lock for 'Mania.
