Roman Reigns could headline WrestleMania for the fourth year in a row

Roman Reigns will become just the second person in WWE history to main-event four consecutive WrestleManias if his match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34 goes on last in New Orleans.

“The Big Dog” is currently tied with three other Superstars on three consecutive headline matches at WWE’s biggest show of the year, while he is just two years away from potentially breaking the all-time record.

In this article, we take a look at the five WWE Superstars who have appeared in the most consecutive WrestleMania main events.

Joint #2 Triple H (three consecutive main events)

Triple H headlined in 2004, 2005 and 2006

Triple H has main-evented WrestleMania on seven occasions during his 23-year WWE career – a tally only bettered by Hulk Hogan (eight main events).

“The Game” first headlined the show in the ‘McMahon In Every Corner’ Fatal 4-Way match that took place at WrestleMania 2000, while he was also involved in the last match on the card at WrestleMania X8 (vs. Chris Jericho), WrestleMania XXV (vs. Randy Orton) and WrestleMania 32 (vs. Roman Reigns).

However, he makes this list due to his three consecutive 'Mania main events between 2004 and 2006, when he headlined at WrestleMania XX (vs. Shawn Michaels and Chris Benoit), WrestleMania 21 (vs. Batista) and WrestleMania 22 (vs. John Cena).

Joint #2 John Cena (three consecutive main events)

John Cena has headlined WrestleMania five times

John Cena has been leading the way with pay-per-view storylines for much of his 15+ years in WWE, so it’s a little surprising that he hasn’t headlined more than five WrestleManias during that time.

“Big Match John” main-evented WWE’s annual extravaganza in consecutive years at WrestleMania 22 (vs. Triple H) and WrestleMania 23 (vs. Shawn Michaels), but he had to wait another four years before he was involved in the last match on the card again.

The 16-time world champion then appeared in the main event three years in a row, facing The Miz at WrestleMania XXVII before headlining back-to-back shows against The Rock at WrestleMania XXVIII and WrestleMania 29.

Joint #2 The Rock (three consecutive main events)

The Rock lost to John Cena at WrestleMania 29

Steve Austin main-evented in two consecutive years at WrestleMania XIV (vs. Shawn Michaels) and WrestleMania XV (vs. The Rock) but he was unable to headline for a third successive year at WrestleMania 2000 due to injury.

His greatest WrestleMania rival, The Rock, had no such problems during his career, as he headlined the show a grand total of five times, most recently in back-to-back years against John Cena at WrestleMania XXVIII and WrestleMania 29.

“The Great One” is included in this list for his exploits during his initial run with WWE when he main-evented three years in a row at WrestleMania XV (vs. Austin), WrestleMania 2000 (vs. Triple H, Big Show and Mick Foley) and WrestleMania X-Seven (vs. Austin).

Joint #2 Roman Reigns (three consecutive main events)

Roman Reigns defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33

When Roman Reigns made his main-roster debut as part of The Shield in late 2012, it was obvious from the very beginning that he was going to become a huge star in WWE.

However, nobody would have imagined at the time that in April 2018, just over five years after debuting, he would potentially be preparing to main-event WrestleMania for the fourth year in a row.

“The Guy” headlined at WrestleMania 31 (vs. Brock Lesnar), WrestleMania 32 (vs. Triple H) and WrestleMania 33 (vs. The Undertaker), while he looks set to go on last again with Lesnar at WrestleMania 34.

If Reigns then goes on to main-event again next year, he will equal the all-time record of consecutive ‘Mania main events.

#1 Hulk Hogan (five consecutive main events)

Hulk Hogan is one of WWE's most iconic Superstars

Who else but Hulk Hogan was going to top this list? While his closest challengers have all main-evented WrestleMania on three occasions, “The Hulkster” is still way ahead with five headline matches in a row at WWE’s biggest show of the year.

The eight-time WrestleMania main-eventer was involved in the final match on the card at the first three ‘Mania shows, which is a good enough record to put him joint-second on this list, but he also went on to headline every event between WrestleMania V and WrestleMania IX.

During that time, he went on last with Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Sgt Slaughter and Sid Justice, and then he made an impromptu appearance at the end of WrestleMania IX to have the final match of the night with Yokozuna.

Some might argue that the Yokozuna match wasn’t technically the main event – Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna was scheduled to close the show – but a 22-second match is still a match, so we’re counting it, brother!
