Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Curtis Axel is a third-generation Superstar who got his name by combining the first name of his father Curt Hennig, also known as Mr. Perfect, and then nickname, or moniker, of his grandfather Larry “The Axe” Hennig. However, before Curtis Axel’s father joined WWE, he competed in the American Wrestling Association, a promotion that his father "The Axe" found huge success in.

Like his old man, Mr. Perfect became one of the biggest stars in AWA. He captured the AWA World Heavyweight Championship and Tag Team Championship, surpassing his father's accomplishments. In 1985, the WWE Hall of Famer joined forces with "The Axe" to take on The Road Warriors. They also battled another famous father and son duo, Verne & Greg Gagne.

The Hennigs later went on to capture the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championships together.

In 1982, the late WWE Hall of Famer Fritz Von Erich competed in his last match, taking on King Kong Bundy. He hung up his boots so that he could focus on his managerial duties with World Class Championship Wrestling. At WCCW’s Parade of Champions event in 1984, Fritz returned to the squared circle and aligned with his sons Kevin and Mike Von Erich to battle their rivals, The Fabulous Freebirds.

The Von Erichs defeated The Freebirds to capture the NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Championships at the event. Fritz would vacate the title later that night when he officially retired, and another of his sons, Kerry, would take his place as the third member of the championship team.
