Samoa Joe debuted on SmackDown Live on after WrestleMania 34 earlier this year. Since then his appearances have been sporadic.

Notwithstanding, he faced Seth Rollins at the Greatest Royal Rumble event. However, things became interesting on July 24th. AJ Styles was awaiting his SummerSlam challenger in the ring, and was instead greeted with an attack from behind by Joe. He then proceeded to sign the contract to challenge Styles for the latter's WWE Championship at SummerSlam.

Styles and Joe have a storied history, to say the least. At TNA Turning Point in 2005 Joe defeated Styles for the X-Division championship, see video below. Throughout 2005 Joe and Styles faced off in X-Division matches, notably at the Against All Odds and Destination X PPVs. In 2007 they once more became embroiled in a lengthy feud.

Joe has excellent submission capabilities. Moreover, he is perhaps the best heel character on SmackDown live. When on the microphone Joe is legitimately terrifying. Styles has been champion for a long time.

Defeating Styles at SummerSlam benefits Joe immensely. Besides, Joe has yet to become champion on the main roster.
