With the Royal Rumble just around the corner, we can officially state that WWE is entering into WrestleMania season.
According to the latest reports, the Universal title match at this year’s “Show of Shows” will be between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns, while AJ Styles will put his WWE Championship on the line against Shinsuke Nakamura or John Cena.
If those reports prove to be true, that means the top title on both Raw and SmackDown Live will be staying with their respective holders over the next couple of months and all the way through to WrestleMania 34.
However, there are plenty of other championships that could still move around in that time. In this article, we rank the five most likely title changes in WWE between now and April.
#5 Cruiserweight Championship
The Cruiserweight Championship has changed hands nine times since its introduction in September 2016, including five times in a two-month spell between August 2017 and October 2017, and it is currently held by Enzo Amore.
“Smacktalker Skywalker” is already the second longest-serving Cruiserweight champion, behind Neville, and will defend his title against Cedric Alexander on the upcoming episode of Monday Night Raw.
Assuming he retains, the only obvious contender to challenge Enzo for the championship before WrestleMania is Hideo Itami, who has won four consecutive matches since debuting on 205 Live in December.
The two are bound to meet somewhere down the line, possibly as soon as the Royal Rumble or Elimination Chamber, and the man formerly known as KENTA is almost certain to win the title when they collide.
#4 Raw Tag Team titles
If reports are to be believed, The Shield was due to split in the lead up to WrestleMania 34 and Seth Rollins was scheduled to face a heel Dean Ambrose at WWE’s biggest show of the year.
However, Ambrose’s long-term injury means he is almost certain to miss WrestleMania, so it looks like WWE will have to change their plans and find a new opponent for Rollins to face in New Orleans.
Having taken on Randy Orton and Triple H in his two WrestleMania matches as a singles performer, it would be a significant step down to have the former WWE champion team with Jason Jordan at the event.
In all likelihood, the dysfunctional duo will lose their Raw Tag Team titles before the annual extravaganza to allow Rollins time to build a meaningful singles storyline over the next few months.
#3 Raw Women’s Championship
If we were putting this article together a week ago, the Raw Women’s Championship would have been nowhere near this list. However, Asuka’s non-title victory over Alexa Bliss means she is surely guaranteed a one-on-one title match at some point in the near future.
If that happens, “The Empress of Tomorrow” is likely to defeat “Little Miss Bliss” to maintain her two-year undefeated streak and take the Raw Women’s Championship into WrestleMania 34.
WWE could even decide to have the record-breaking NXT Women’s champion win the title from Alexa before the Royal Rumble, which would protect her from taking part in – and potentially losing – the first-ever women's Rumble match.
#2 Intercontinental Championship
Ever since WrestleMania 33, it has been rumoured that the main event of WrestleMania 34 will see Roman Reigns challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.
It will be the fourth year in a row that “The Big Dog” has headlined WWE’s annual event and the second time in the last four WrestleManias that he will have stepped inside the ring with “The Beast”.
Before they inevitably meet again in New Orleans, there’s the small matter of the Intercontinental Championship, which Reigns won from The Miz in November 2017 and has since defended against Elias, Jason Jordan, Cesaro and Samoa Joe.
Assuming WWE doesn’t want the three-time WrestleMania main-eventer to hold another title going into his match against Lesnar, nobody would be surprised if he lost his Intercontinental Championship back to The Miz – already a seven-time IC champ – in the next few weeks.
#1 United States Championship
The United States Championship is the most likely title to change hands before WrestleMania 34 for one simple reason: it currently has no holder.
Dolph Ziggler defeated Baron Corbin and Bobby Roode in a Triple Threat match at Clash of Champions to win the title for the second time in his career, seemingly ending speculation that his WWE career was almost over.
However, two nights later on SmackDown Live, Ziggler placed his new title in the middle of the ring, leaving fans with “something to remember him by”, and we haven’t seen him since.
A tournament to crown a new United States champion is currently taking place on SmackDown. Whether that leads to Ziggler's return or someone actually winning the title, we’ll have to wait and see. Whatever happens, a champion will surely be crowned before WrestleMania.
