7 major signings WWE should make in 2018

Admit it, everyone will mark out if CM Punk returns to WWE in 2018
Admit it, everyone will mark out if CM Punk returns to WWE in 2018.

2017 is in the books and WWE made some major additions to their roster throughout the year.

Currently, the promotion has a deep roster of their performers spread across Raw, SmackDown, NXT and 205 Live. But this is not going to stop Vince McMahon and Triple H from acquiring the signatures of new wrestlers in 2018.

If we go by the rumours, WWE has already started making moves to expand their roster. With their competitors like New Japan Pro Wrestling gaining ground, WWE’s search for star power seems right.

But who should they sign this year?

We are going to dwell a bit on this question and take a look at some potential wrestlers that could end up being on the WWE roster in 2018.

#7 Kenny Omega

Omega's NJPW contract will be a hurdle for WWE

Kenny Omega would’ve been on top of this list if it wasn’t for his contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling. The Cleaner is advertised for many Ring of Honor and NJPW shows in 2018 which indicates that he will be staying out of WWE for the time being.

But in the second half of 2018, it could be a different story.

WWE’s interest in Omega is no secret. And considering how good Omega has been over the past few years, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Vince McMahon splashes out big money to attain the services of the reigning IWGP United States champion.

Whether or not Omega would succeed in WWE is a debate for another day. Nevertheless, the signing would be huge and can attract many eyeballs to the WWE product.

#6 Ricochet

The signature of Ricochet has been eluding WWE for quite sometime now
The signature of Ricochet has been eluding WWE for quite some time now

It’s been a few years since Rey Mysterio left WWE. And unfortunately, Vince McMahon and his team are yet to find a replacement for the Master of 619.

Enter Ricochet.

Ricochet has everything that WWE is looking for. He is excellent in between the ropes and has good charisma even though he needs to work on his microphone skills.

WWE has tried to get Ricochet on board a few times in the past but things did not work out due to one reason or the other. If the promotion can make it happen in 2018, it will be a big boost for them.

Signing and sending Ricochet to 205 Live is one option but a better one would be to place him on the main roster. Ricochet can flourish with the proper push and go on to become successful just like Mysterio.

#5 EC 3

The current version of EC3 will be an asset for WWE

The first spell of EC3 with WWE was forgettable. He failed to make a huge impact in the promotion but then he found his rhythm in Impact Wrestling. The current version of EC3 has a lot to offer as he improved leaps and bounds during his time outside WWE.

With his Impact Wrestling contract set to expire in early 2018, it might be the right time for WWE to pounce on the opportunity and get EC3 back on board.

While a direct entry into the main roster seems unlikely, EC3 can still make it big in NXT just like Drew McIntyre. If he does sign with WWE and goes on to become a huge star, it would be poetic justice considering how bad his initial run was.

#4 Rey Mysterio

Mysterio is open to return to WWE
Mysterio is open to returning to WWE.

Rey Mysterio might not be in his prime but he is still a legendary figure in the professional wrestling business. Also, Mysterio might be WWE’s best shot at saving 205 Live. Having such a big name like him on the program is sure to make the fans tune in.

Alternatively, WWE can use Mysterio on the main roster as well. The current crop of WWE wrestlers going up against Mysterio will result in some mouthwatering scenarios.

In his recent interview, The Master of 619 revealed that he is indeed open to a move to WWE. This is a positive sign. However, age will be a huge problem for Mysterio and he needs to sign the contract at the earliest.

#3 Bobby Lashley

Lashley's legit MMA background can be put to good use

Bobby Lashley’s first spell with the WWE is often overlooked by the fans. He became a two-time ECW Champion and a one-time United States champion during the run. Also, he featured in the high profile feud between Vince McMahon and Donald Trump.

After leaving WWE, Lashley enjoyed a huge success in Impact Wrestling. His MMA career flourished as well in Bellator.

One of the reasons why Brock Lesnar’s gimmick works are the legit MMA background that he has. Lashley has something similar now and if he returns to the promotion, WWE can bank in on this.

While the possibilities with The Human Kryptonite are many, a Lashley vs. Lesnar match would draw mainstream fans into the WWE Universe.

#2 Ronda Rousey

There isn't much explanation needed on why WWE needs to sign Rousey
There isn't much explanation needed on why WWE needs to sign Rousey

WWE is closer than ever to signing Ronda Rousey. Ever since she lost to Amanda Nunes in the UFC, Rousey’s MMA career has been a big question mark.

At the same time, she is in good terms with WWE. The former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion played a major role in the Mae Young Classic and her close ally Shayna Baszler has signed with WWE.

Above all, there are rumours which suggest that WWE made the Women’s Royal Rumble specifically for Rousey.

All these factors point towards a potential Rousey – WWE association in the near future.

The mainstream star power of Rousey will be an asset to WWE’s women’s division and they could also attract some eyeballs from the MMA community by having Rousey on the roster.

#1 CM Punk

If Punk returns to the WWE, it would be one of the biggest surprises in recent history
If Punk returns to the WWE, it would be one of the biggest surprises in recent history

This is a controversial one. But hate him or love him, fans are bound to mark out if CM Punk returns to WWE.

Punk’s MMA journey has been a forgettable one so far. His UFC debut ended in a first-round defeat to Mickey Gall back in September 2016 and he has been on the sidelines ever since. At the age of 39, things do not look good for the straight edge superstar.

Another loss in the UFC almost guarantees him a release from the promotion. While other MMA organizations would be interested in having him on board, a return to the wrestling business is the better option for Punk at this age.

As for WWE’s side, they are unlikely to pass on an opportunity to pull off the biggest return in recent professional wrestling history.
