9 memorable eliminations in the Elimination Chamber

The Elimination Chamber structure
The Elimination Chamber structure

The Elimination Chamber is a classic match-type set up by Eric Bischoff. Well, that's what WWE officials would say but surely there were a lot of people to bring up the idea of the match. It doesn't matter who brought the idea but it is nothing less than a spectacle that WWE fans get to see every year.

It won't be wrong to say that the quality of matches we are seeing is degrading year by year, nonetheless, Elimination Chamber pay-per-view fits perfectly between the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania as the clouds are cleared by then to set up for the WrestleMania match card.

Here we look at 9 eliminations in the Elimination Chamber match which gave us moments which wrote the books of pro-wrestling history.

#9 New Years Revolution 2006- Carlito and Chris Master eliminate Kane

Kane was one half of the World Tag Team Champion along with Big Show and entered after he beat Triple H in the qualifying match. He was definitely, not the favorite to win the match but his elimination till now stands the most out of the box.

He was the final entrant in the match and being fresh, he took out everyone including Michaels and Cena. Carlito and Masters realized that they needed to work together if they had to take on the 'Big Red Machine.' They executed a double team DDT on one half of the Tag Team Champion. Thereafter, Masters press slammed Carlito onto Kane, and they both put their body over him giving him no chance to kick out.

Kane continued his feud with Carlito and Masters along with Big Show. It led to a match between the two teams at WrestleMania 22 in which they were successful in retaining their titles.

#8 No Way Out 2009- Jeff Hardy eliminates Edge

Edge went into the chamber as the defending champion and the odds were highly against him as he opened the match with stalwarts like Triple H and The Undertaker locked up in the pod.

However, no one expected him to be eliminated within 3 minutes by Jeff Hardy thanks to an inside cradle. Edge had Hardy set up for the spear before he countered it into a roll-up and gave the fans at Key Arena an unforgettable moment. As Jim Ross pointed out repeatedly throughout the match, we were guaranteed to see a new champion.

Edge looked in utter disbelief as he couldn't believe that his championship reign had ended. You have to feel sorry for Edge given he was one of the top heels that time. But, hey aren't heels made to give us prominent moments like that?

#7 No Way Out 2009- Edge eliminates John Cena

Fast forward to one and a half hours later, Edge had hit Kofi on the steel steps and replaced him in the chamber match taking the crowd by surprise. He became the first and only man in the history to compete in two Elimination Chamber matches in the same night.

But, wait we aren't here to talk about that. We are here to talk about the elimination of the most polarizing star in the WWE. Cena became the most protected superstar and Vince's homegrown boy by that time. Some fans loved it and some fans hated it for the same reason. However, none of them expected him to be eliminated so early. When Cena went for the AA on Edge, Jericho hit a Codebreaker and Mysterio hit a 619 and he took a spear from Edge for the pinfall loss. He went out after just 142 seconds of action.

Any betting website would have earned millions if they had placed bets on how long Cena was to last. Nonetheless, they might have made a lot of money given that it was Edge who won the match!

#6 New Year's Revolution 2005- Chris Jericho eliminates Edge

This was the third Elimination Chamber match in the history of WWE and the first one for Edge. Little did the fans know that he was going to be a part of the first controversial elimination in its history.

After Orton had ducked a spear from Edge, it hit Michaels instead. He hit the spear on Orton moments later but Shawn was too weak to count it. In his rage, the Rated R- Superstar slapped Michaels! You know what comes next when you do that- a 'Sweet Chin Music.' Jericho followed it with a Lionsault on Edge and Michaels counted to three. The crowd popped huge for it. Edge's previous issues with Michaels did the trick too.

The story revolved between the members of Evolution and a vacant World Title on the line. Edge was the reason why the title had been vacated at the first place but he was never the favorite to win it. Nonetheless, he setup a feud with Shawn Michaels and defeated him at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

#5 Summer Slam 2003- Triple H eliminates Goldberg

Goldberg made his entry at the America West Arena to a standing ovation and to a normal fan he was the heavy favorite but as far as critics were concerned they had seen Hunter winning it already.

Goldberg had cleared the structure by eliminating Michaels, Jericho, and Orton and glared at the Game to take him out. Goldberg couldn't control himself and kicked through the glass to break it and later bust open Triple H. Goldberg set HHH up for a Spear, but Triple H had the sledgehammer ready, thanks to Ric Flair, and he hit Goldberg in the head with it and covered him for the win to retain his championship at the shortest Elimination Chamber match to date.

This was the first and last Elimination Chamber match of Goldberg if he doesn't come out of retirement again. The vicious post match attack saw Triple H busting open Goldberg with three sledgehammer shots to his head, one of them while he was handcuffed. This elimination only escalated their feud and finally led to a match at Unforgiven, where Goldberg would win the World Title.

#4 No Way Out 2008- Finlay eliminate MVP

This Elimination Chamber match was held to decide the No. 1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Title. There weren't any specific story-lines going into the match except for The Undertaker or Batista being the favorites to win it. MVP was surely half-man and half-amazing but wasn't of the stature to compete for the World Title at WrestleMania.

MVP kept punching The Undertaker with a chain but he kept coming at him. What followed then, is something every Superstar should avoid at the Elimination Chamber match- run onto the top of the pod to get away! Well, you can't run away from the Elimination Chamber match from The Undertaker and got himself Chokeslammed from the top of the pod onto the canvas (there was no way, he could bump himself into the steel).

Finlay covered and eliminated him. This is one of the greatest bumps in the history of the Elimination Chamber matches and you should definitely watch it.

#3 No Way Out 2008- Chris Jericho eliminate Umaga

This match too like the previous one was conducted to decide the No. 1 Contender for the World Title. Umaga, to keep up his character, had to be forced into the pod by the referees. The Samoan was one of the deadliest wrestlers in the history of the company but again, not a favorite to main-event WrestleMania.

Umaga was ready to strike Jericho with the Samoan Spike but the 'Heart Break Kid' gave him the 'Sweet Chin Music' out of nowhere. It was followed by the Codebreaker, the Pedigree and a super Swanton Bomb by Jeff Hardy off the pod. Jericho covered Umaga for the three count.

If you thought Big Show was the toughest to put over, the creative surely managed to make Umaga seem more solid there. Coming up to WrestleMania 24, he started feuding with Batista.

#2 Elimination Chamber 2010- Chris Jericho eliminates The Undertaker

Edge had won the Royal Rumble and declared that he was going to challenge the champion of the blue brand. If you took a look at other opponents in the match, only The Undertaker or Jericho had the chance to win this match. Shawn had begged The Undertaker for a match at WrestleMania which 'The Deadman' refused repeatedly. It was enough of a sign that he would interfere and cost 'The Deadman' his title at the Chamber.

After Undertaker had eliminated Morrison, it was down to Jericho and 'The Phenom' as the final two. Undertaker was very heavy on Jericho and put him through 'The Last Ride.' However, as he made the throat-slashing gesture, we saw the floor grating open up and out came Shawn Michaels! Michaels nailed the Sweet Chin Music on The Undertaker. Desperate for a WrestleMania rematch, Michaels stood over The Undertaker while Jericho covered him and won his 6th World Title.

Edge and Jericho would battle it out for the World Title at WrestleMania 26 where Jericho retained his title. Meanwhile, The Undertaker defeated Shawn Michaels and ended his career in one of the greatest matches ever to take place at the 'Showcase of Immortals.'

#1 Survivor Series 2002- Shawn Michaels eliminates Triple H

There is no way any other elimination will top the list other than the one that crowned the first ever winner of the Elimination Chamber match. The match card saw a 6-man Tag Team Elimination Table Match along with a WWE Tag Team Title three-way Elimination Match to top the Elimination Chamber match. It didn't have the traditional 10-man Elimination Tag Team match with awkward stipulations but that was a welcome change.

Most people expected it to be down to Triple H and Shawn Michaels as the final two and so it happened. Both guys were in a bloody mess by then and used every part of the sadistic structure to destroy each other. Hunter even gave Michaels the Pedigree but was too tired to go for the pin quickly which resulted in a kick-out. Shawn retaliated by giving him a 'Sweet Chin Music' and covered him for the victory.

It was an aggressive, laboring match with some enormous spots. 'The Game' displayed a lot of formidability by toiling with a crushed larynx for over twenty minutes thanks to RVD. The story of Michaels returning to emerge with the World Title in his second match in over four years is astounding. The crowd at the Madison Square Garden went crazy and gave a standing ovation to the 'Heart Break Kid.'
