Looking back, it's hard to believe that CM Punk and Chris Jericho battling for the WWE title at WrestleMania wasn't the main event. Despite this fact, the match was fantastic. Hardcore fans saw this as a dream match and the two delivered.
For almost a half an hour, the duo put on a technical clinic. It was also a master's class in psychology. Jericho and Punk went back and forth with no man getting the upper hand.
Eventually, Punk would overcome Jericho with the anaconda vice. This was Punk's most decisive win at the showcase of the immortals. It was also the closest he would ever get to main eventing the show.
The fact that this was not the main event was the one downside of the match. The main event spot was reserved for the "Once in a Lifetime" bout between The Rock and John Cena. It makes sense that they went with that in the main event slot, but it's still frustrating in hindsight.
