I can sit at home and move pieces around to suit my agenda without worrying about the repercussions. A match that I have wanted to see for the longest time was Shawn Michaels versus AJ Styles. Shawn Michaels is my favourite wrestler, and I consider him to be the greatest of all time. Despite missing his entire TNA and NJPW runs, AJ Styles fast became my current favourite wrestler.
Until recently, this match remained a pipe dream. Shawn Michaels was happily retired and planned on staying that way. There was a big push to get HBK to come out of retirement in 2017 to face Styles for the WWE Championship. It never materialized. But at WWE Crown Jewel, the unthinkable happened. Shawn Michaels came out of retirement to team up with Triple H to take on Kane and The Undertaker.
Michaels has since said that match was a one-off and that he is still retired. But what if HBK came back for one more run that culminated in him facing AJ Styles at WrestleMania 35? How would that run look? Let's find out.
AJ Styles Loses To Daniel Bryan
AJ Styles is set to take on Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at the 2019 Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
It is sure to be an excellent match. AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan are not only two of the greatest wrestlers in the world today, but they are also two of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Whoever wins or loses the match, the audience will be the real winners.
However, there must be a winner, and there must be a loser.
AJ Styles must lose this match.
If I were booking, I would have AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan open the card. The action and emotional investment from the crowd will set the tone for the rest of the night.
After 20 minutes of action, I would have Daniel Bryan cheat to win the match. After the match, I would have a visibly frustrated AJ Styles stay in the ring, before walking slowly to the back.
Shawn Michaels Enters The Royal Rumble Match
Every Royal Rumble match has its fair share of surprise entrants. It is part of the fun of the match to see who will show up. However, unless it is an active superstar returning from injury, surprise entrants do not win the Royal Rumble match. But what if Shawn Michaels entered the Rumble match? Would that still be the case?
Sometime in the late teens, I would have HBK enter the 2019 men's Royal Rumble match.
If I were booking, there would be a lull in the action, as everyone in the ring knuckled down for the long haul. When the buzzer hits, Shawn Michaels' iconic theme song blares across the arena. I would wait for a few minutes, whilst the crowd works itself into a frenzy, and commentary freaks out.
Then, I would have Michaels slowly walk onto the stage in his gear, before walking slowly down the ramp and entering the ring. The crowd roars with approval as commentary confirms that HBK is in the match.
AJ Styles Eliminates Shawn Michaels From The Match
The reason I would have Shawn Michaels enter in the late teens is that it gives him a chance to demonstrate that he has still got it. He proved that he still has the stamina to wrestle for a long amount of time at WWE Crown Jewel.
Shawn Michaels has entered the match and proceeds to give a Sweet Chin Music to everyone in the ring. Perhaps he quickly eliminates some lower card wrestlers as well.
I would book HBK to have a very very good showing.
He proves to the live crowd that he hasn't missed a step, wrestling for more than 30 minutes, making it to the final four.
The crowd is firmly in his corner. They are watching the most miraculous comeback, and are willing him on to win.
Then, from out of nowhere, AJ Styles who is not even in the match rushes to the ring and eliminates Michaels from the match.
AJ Styles Explains Himself
It would seem that AJ Styles has turned heel. Certainly, rushing to the ring to deny a beloved legend a fairy tale comeback win is certainly heelish. On the Smackdown Live after the Royal Rumble, AJ Styles comes to the ring to explain himself.
He says that he is angry. Angry and frustrated. He failed to reclaim his WWE Championship once again. Yes, Bryan cheated, but the old AJ Styles still would have won. He questioned whether he truly was the best wrestler in the world. And then, he saw Shawn Michaels return to the ring.
A man many consider to be the greatest of all time. He knew then that the only way to prove to himself that he was still the best was to face Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania. Because he was not WWE champion, he had to prevent Shawn Michaels from winning the match and challenging Daniel Bryan.
He also knew that eliminating Michaels would get Michaels' attention. AJ Styles then lays down the challenge: AJ Styles versus Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 35.
AJ Styles Hounds Shawn Michaels until HBK accepts
The next week on Monday Night RAW (both shows should benefit from the exposure of this feud), Shawn Michaels comes out to the ring to address AJ Styles. He says that he only came back to win the world championship, and that whilst AJ Styles needs to face Shawn Michaels, Shawn Michaels doesn't need to face AJ Styles. He declines the challenge.
Over the next few weeks, Styles becomes more and more unhinged. He is more vicious in his matches and continues to attack his opponents after he has won. He attacks wrestlers backstage. And each time, he calls out Shawn Michaels. Implores him to accept his challenge.
Finally, AJ Styles goes too far and attacks a referee. He is suspended. This is meant to be reminiscent of Shawn Michaels' own behavior in 2010 when his desire to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania consumed him.
A few weeks later on RAW, Michaels is in the ring, perhaps to talk up Triple H's WrestleMania match. He says once again that he has no interest in facing AJ Styles. Suddenly, AJ Styles rushes out of the crowd and attacks Shawn Michaels. He once again challenges Michaels.
The next week on RAW, Shawn Michaels accepts the challenge. The match is set.
The WrestleMania 35 Main Event
Finally, WrestleMania 35 has arrived.
This will be one of the most, if not the most anticipated matches on the entire card.
AJ Styles versus Shawn Michaels; the greatest wrestlers of their generation attempting to prove who the greatest of all time is. The WWE will no doubt present an actual video package, with interviews from both men talking about what the match means to them, a video chronicling everything from the Royal Rumble elimination to Michaels finally accepting, and video of their achievements, and the brawl on RAW.
This match will be the main event of the evening. After absolutely epic entrances, the bell will ring and the match will begin.
Whether its more in the vein of Hollywood Hulk Hogan versus The Rock, or a technical masterpiece like Shawn Michaels versus Kurt Angle, it will be an excellent match.
I would have AJ Styles win the match.
