5 Reasons WWE Must Break Up The Shield Soon

Roman Reigns, WWE,
Does The WWE need to break up The Shield?

WWE needs to break up The Shield

While that might sound like a completely asinine idea, especially with how over the faction is with the WWE Universe, it doesn't seem like it is really solving the problems that WWE originally reunited the group to solve. In fact, despite Reigns going back to his semi-silent powerhouse role within The Shield, fans are still responding negatively.

Furthermore, the reunion is causing a plethora of other problems on The red brand and will have dire consequences if it isn't fixed soon. Of course, some fans are going to agree with that assessment and want the Shield reunion to continue, but one has to look at the what exactly keeping the group together will do to the WWE landscape.

In the end, WWE already teased the move during the September 23rd episode of Raw when Drew McIntyre, Dolph Ziggler and Bruan Strowman tried to get Ambrose to join them, which could mean that the WWE sees the writing on the wall. Either that or this was their plan all along and they are just waiting for the right time to execute it.

With that being said, here are five reasons why The Shield needs to break up soon.

#5 Television ratings

Roman Reigns,
Is Roman Reigns the reason for Monday Night Raw's sagging ratings?

One would think that with the most popular faction in WWE history back together that ratings would be booming. Unfortunately for the company, however, the WWE Universe seems to just see it as a way to get fans behind Roman Reigns and are not interested in WWE's tricky tactics in order to make Reigns the guy.

Another problem here is that there is a lot of quality programming on Monday night that Raw has to compete with. Of course some fans are going to stop watching as Monday Night football, Dancing With The Stars, and other shows become available, but WWE needs to stop the bleeding and give the remaining fans the content they want to see.

And that's not Roman Reigns and The Shield dominating the title picture

#4 Holding down other talent

Finn Balor,
Where are the opportunities for superstars like Finn Balor?

Let's be honest here - WWE is holding a lot of talent back in order to make this Shield reunion work and while the company has the right to do as they please, they need to know that it's hurting their overall product. In fact, between Finn Balor falling out of the title picture in one night, and turning Bruan Strowman heel, it seems like the reunion has done irreparable damage to the red brand.

Not only is The Shield reunion filling up too many slots at the top of the card, which makes it impossible for a lot of talent to get passed the mid-card, WWE has also ruined Superstars in order to try to make this thing work.

If nothing else, the company needs to take a good long look an realize that this just isn't worth it, especially if it's not working.

#3 Impact of break up

Dean Ambrose,
Will Dean Ambrose become the most hate WWE superstar in the history of the company?

Its all about timing and that's exactly what WWE needs to remember when it comes to breaking up The Shield. Then again, timing is probably the main ingredient in any great pro wrestling storyline, but it is going to be absolutely critical to The Shield break up and what happens after it.

For example, The Shield reunion has only been going on for a short time now, which means that many fans would probably expect it to continue. With that being said, why not capitalize on that expectation and break up the group earlier than expected? In fact, why not just rip the rug out from under The WWE Universe with this swerve.

Not only does this allow WWE to shift a lot of the hatred towards Ambrose for breaking up The Shield so prematurely, but it also makes Reigns look like the good guy in comparison. Of course, the impact of all this is going to depend on how sour fans are at Ambrose for what he eventually does, but WWE could pull it off if they choose to do it sooner rather than later.

#2 Continuity of the storyline

The Shield,
Did WWE doom themselves by teasing The Shield breakup too soon?

Believe it or not, continuity is a huge part of pro wrestling storyline and it is something that can really take fans out of an experience if not followed correctly. Interestingly enough, WWE has already planted the seeds for The Shield to break up, which means they will eventually have to follow up on a plot point and resolve it somehow.

Unfortunately for The WWE, fans and The Shield, they have seemingly begun teasing the breakup prematurely and will now be forced to do it in a matter of weeks and not months. Of course WWE could always keep this going as long as they want, but eventually, fans are going to get tired of being teased with this every week.

For example, it was just like The Big Show versus The Authority back in 2013. The storyline gained a lot of traction with fans over the supposed pay off when show finally turned on Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. With that being said, however, the impact became less and less the more WWE teased it and went back and forth.

Again, it's up to WWE on what they want to do here, but they need to consider what this will do to the continuity of the storyline and how long they can keep fans interested in it.

#1 Helps legitimize Reigns's title reign

Roman Reigns, Universal title,
How legitimate is Roman Reigns's title run with The Shield protecting him?

It's no secret that The WWE Universe has a never view of Roman Reigns's Universal title run, but breaking up The Shield would actually help that in a lot of ways. Not only does it allow for Reigns to prove he can retain the title without outside help, something he hasn't managed to accomplish yet, it also proves that he can dominate The Raw roster on his own.

In all honesty, WWE was doing much better with Reigns even before The Shield reunion changed everything. He was getting cocky, controversial and he could even back it up in the ring. Of course, a lot of fans were still booing him at this time, but it was nothing compared to what it used to be before those changes were made.

In the end, WWE is risking delegitimizing Reign's title run by doing The Shield reunion at the same title and it's going to come back and bite them. In fact, every time the WWE tries to portray Reigns as a top guy in the future, they are probably going to be met with, then why did he need The Shield or someone else to help him win?
