From the WWE Rumor Mill: Is a tag team division being added for the women?

The Iconic Duo of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce would make great candidates for the WWE Women's Tag Championship

What's the story?

Ringside News is reporting on a recent Q&A session that WWE Hall Of Famer Lita had in Paris, France. During this session, Lita revealed that there are talks of the WWE adding a tag team division for the women.

In case you didn't know...

The WWF, as it was known back there, actually had a tag team championship for the women. The championship debuted in 1983, but the WWF deactivated the championship 1989 with only five total title reigns.

More recently, Impact Wrestling created a tag team championship for the Knockouts Division in 2009. The first champions were Sarita and Taylor Wilde. The title would only last for a few years as the company deactivated it in 2013.

The heart of the matter

There have been many firsts for the WWE over the past year starting with the first ever Hell In A Cell match between Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks. The Money In The Bank concept debuted for the women this year with Carmella being the first winner of the briefcase.

With the Mae Young Classic taking place this past summer, the WWE is finally in a position to be able to execute a tag division. There are some NXT veterans, plus those in the tournament that could be put in the tag division immediately.

Lita would expand on the rumours with the following quotes:

“There has been talks of tag titles for the Women’s Division and I think that I love that they first introduced the MITB briefcase, that’s been a long time coming and that adds an element of surprise within the title picture.”
“I would love to see these rumored tag titles appear sooner than later, but for that to happen, I hope they bring up these women that are already at NXT or some women they’ve seen on the Mae Young Classic and expand the roster. “

What's next?

The Smackdown Live women will be on display this Sunday at the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view as two women from legendary families will clash. The champion Natalya will defend her championship against Charlotte Flair.

Author's take

YES, PLEASE! I think a tag division would be great for the women that are not involved in main feuds at this time. While Smackdown Live does a good job of featuring their entire women's roster, but a few women currently ignored on the Monday Night Raw side.

This presents an opportunity to call up the Iconic Duo of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay right away. They work very well together, and would make a great first-time WWE Women's Tag Team Champions of this era.

There are logistics which would need to be worked out, like if they have tag titles for each brand? Could it be the only cross-branded title in the WWE?

Regardless, I hope this becomes a reality very soon!
